I quite like HoMM games but Age of Wonders is my favourite in this genre. I have been thinking about getting Fallen Enchantress for a long time but I've just been waiting for it to mature. Would you say the game is better than AoW yet? If not I think I'll just wait for AoW3. But if you think it's as good or better I'll give it a shot.
"Story"
Story helps, but I think the story in games is always inferior to a good book or even a good film. When it comes to games, I want gameplay, and that's what I'm talking about. As for story in a game, if you only care about that and don't care so much about gameplay, then adventure games are the place to be. If your only definition is that you are playing a role, then you could call the majority of games an RPG, even games like Crysis or Fifa Soccer etc. The fact is, it used to be generally acknowledged that when a game was called an RPG, it was one which had all those key elements and lots of depth. The fact that you even defend these companies just shows how screwed modern gaming is. Modern gamers don't care enough, and the game development companies are exploiting this gleefully. I

Typical EA. In the good ole days, developers they were perfectly capable of making a strategic and tactical game but with plenty of action and immersive views. Hidden & Dangerous is an example, that game is basically just a WW2 version of Syndicate. You have a squad, they have a selection of gear which you can specify, it's played in a large area and you can move your squad together or split them up and make chokepoints etc, and you have an objective you have to accomplish. I hate it. It doesn't know what it wants to be. I can't call it an RPG when there are barely any spells and such limited stats and upgrades and stuff, and the combat is mindless hack n slash action. But it doesn't work as an action hack n slash either because the combat just isn't fun enough, and all the boring quests just dull the whole thing down. So to me it's neither one thing nor the other and it fails at both. If I am going to play an RPG, I want a proper RPG

I would never play multiplayer. I like my TBS games to take a very long time. My favourite AOW/AOW2 games have gone on for perhaps 10 hours or so, and I don't think that fits well with multiplayer. I would just use RTS type games for multiplayer. (and FPS's etc.)

I hated it. Finishing it became a serious chore. I thought Origins was ok. It's no Baldur's Gate, and it was a bit dumbed down, but not terrible. I (naively) hoped that they simplified it to attract a new audience, and then in the future they might elaborate on things and show the new audience how it should be done. In reality they they made the sequel even dumber again, if not more, and the result is just a boring hack N slash. It's not even a well made one either, with all the re-us

I think that's how most people here feel. I also think that's why they went with the expansion, so they can almost re-engineer the whole game.

I think a lot of people would be better off just buying King Arthur instead. Or wait for the sequel which is due this year sometime. Elemental may be really good some day, but I can't see it happening any time soon. Have to see what the expansion does.

How the hell can you say it's unreasonable to expect more than MoM? What's the point of them even making a new game if there are already games that are better than it? The fact is, this game is still not good enough. I wouldn't buy it as it is now, and seeing as I did, I would tell my friends not to buy it. Once it gets to a good point though, that will change. It's not far off now, but still has a bit more to go. For the time being, I still prefer to play older games, so until this game is t

You sound like you're talking to a little family run barber shop or something. Do you really think lead designers just make whatever they feel like? These big companies often rely on investors and external financiers to fund their games, and they don't spend countless millions of dollars without dictating exactly how they want it to go. This will be agreed with by the C

It's totally playable. You absolutely NEED the patch. The original released game was a total mess, and now with patch 1.1 (which is about the millionth patch) it has made it FAR better. So you can play it and there is 'some' enjoyment to be had from it. I think what Rata said is true though, it still doesn't have much depth or content yet. If they can add this it could be the best game of it's kind, but I'm still waiting for it to be added. I think the game was so messy, it has taken

I agree. They will surely know this already though, so we just have to wait for them to do it. I'm kinda disappointed I have to wait, but at least they have done most of the important stuff now and hopefully they can focus on getting some great magic.

Argh, this is not what I wanted to be reading. I've been keeping my eye on the progress towards this patch and was hoping it to all be good news. I think with magic, they need to look at Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic and just shamelessly copy it if need be. I want to start the game with a few basic spells, and constantly learn new spells through the course of the game. I want AE spells, heals, direct damage, buffs, and lots of utility, and I want the combat stages to involve the magic

Skills would make monsters more unique, heros more unique, and generic units more unique. You could give different factions access to different skills, researchable skills, etc. But I don't think that idea has ever picked up much steam so I doubt it will happen. Well the obvious one is Fallout 3 and New Vegas. They are basically the same as Borderlands. They do some things better, and some things worse. I think Oblivion is an obvious suggestion too as it's the same too, but fantasy rather than shooting. As for RPG's there was that just came out called Two Worlds 2 which is getting great reviews. I plan on buying it tomorrow. There is also another one that is a team based RPG called Drakensang: The River of Time. I plan on getting that after I have pl
