Ran into a crash within 20 minutes. And the crash from reloading a game from within a game is still there. If I had to guess, multi-core users are probably seeing more crashes than others.

The difficulty of the game just shot up about 50% because of the monsters. They're making it tough to even get your second city started. If they were semi-opportunists before, they're fucking ninjas now. As I've said elsewhere, that's gotta change. This build seems like it's full of more minor bugs, but fewer critical ones. Certain buttons becoming non-functional if you were interrupted by pop up messages, the cwazy amount of quest spawns, units that were killed in combat being able t

Here's typically how my first dozen new games in Elemental start out. Start. Go in a direction. Recruit Janusk. Send Janusk out the opposite direction. By the end of Year 1, if I don't see: -A materials spawn -A gold spawn -A metal spawn -At least one other resource spawn I restart. I do this about, oh, 10 times at least until I find a location/spawn set that gives me some minimal resources. ---- I

Turn 20. The single peasant I've been able to train is killed during a battle with a single bandit. Two more of the same kind of bandit await outside my city. Then an army of spiderlings marches off map, that is 2x the strength of my sovereign and Janusk. It marches straight to my only city and kills my sovereign and Janusk. Turn 20. Game Over. It's like Stardock is determined to make creeps so irritating/numerous/difficult than no one w

I'm a little concerned by the bump in monster everything. In 1.09n, creeps are semi-intelligent already, and quite the pain in the ass starting game. Now they're going to be even smarter AND more of them will spawn at the game start? It will require feeling out, but honestly if creeps are going to rise to their full potential finally, a couple very important things need to happen: 1. Creeps need to treat the AI factions the same as the player. It's not fair to the player to have to in

Character and faction creation were and still are a pretty big area of disappointment. I've never, ever taken starting gear. Now I can see why. The traits, flaws and talents of both factions and sovereigns are fairly uninteresting when they're even working at all. I hope this is one place they just haven't gotten around to dealing with. But it's quite silly when your custom faction has like 6 positive traits and no flaws.

I just hope they figure out a way to control the fact you can build as much research as you want. Nothing worse than a system that says "the best way to do something is to build 10 of something, then destroy them and replace them with something better."
Eventually publishers (as EA is doing already) are all going to move to hosting their own services, which will make Steamworks integration far less likely to happen. Some publishers will undoubtedly stick with it for a long time, but I don't expect the biggest ones to touch it.
They are years late to that party. They only argument the retailers have is the "Steam now comes with everything." While I don't buy their gloomy monopoly future threats, it's worth thinking about. Once Steam took off with one or two big publishers, everyone jumped in. Add the indie gaming scene, and Valve now occupies this weird role of publisher, distributor and developer. The fact they've been very nice and very professional about it has gotten them this far without problems. I don't see that lasting for ever though. Valve

I'm liking more, and more, and more games coming out of Euro dev houses. My list of "damn those were good games" and games I'm looking forward to are quickly all being made up of European devs. They seem to be able to step back from the dry-humping of genres for the sake of sales, and do something fresh and original with the genre because they have the time, the backing and inclination. Plus they aren't trying to ram $60 titles down our throats every 6 months. The games may not ultima

I'm somewhat in agreement here. Many of my games have been dictated by the technology choices I made. Many of a NEW player's initial reactions to the game are based on the techs they did (or didn't) bother to research. I agree that it doesn't lend much to players specializing their faction according to research: you need virtually everything, except select parts of Adventuring and Diplomacy. The AI specializes its research, but that just leads to grossly over-effective (or crippled, i

I'm neck deep in Chapter 3 (I think) or 4....just had the first real fight with the Salamandra Wizard And the amount of stuff you can do just kind of made me go "Ok...time for a break." I've already put probably 20 to 30 hours into the game. I should really finish it by the time Witcher 2 is on sale. Witcher was like, my biggest surprise of this year. I panned that game so hard based on the tutorial and, the admittedly hammy writing up until then. But it really delivered afterward in

http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=5836 Shameless bump for my own Q&A thread on their forums. I asked a lot of questions and got a lot of answers, so if you want to know more about the game (and find links to other reviews) read through there. I have pretty high hopes for this game as being original and fun. But I've also quit thinking of it as a DKII successor.
CD Projekt developed The Witcher. I grabbed it off Steam last time it was on sale, and never managed to get past the section where you have to battle "The Beast". Apparently, chosing any skill path bar one results in the fight being incredibly long winded and boring, taking around 20 minutes to complete. YouTube it if you'd like to see why. I'd advise reading up on it before you get that far - it left a bad taste in my mouth, and I never went back to finis

I sort of cringe at the idea that the majority of research now comes from overloading your cities with Archivists and such. I've run into the issue already in 1.09n where research is the only thing worth building in my cities. Which has undercut the value of specialization. Added to the fact there's no scaling or diminishing returns on city-built research....yeah. Lost library is a perk, but it's going to be amount to drop of water in the bucket in a mature game.
Beta.
Crash bugs, I could live with. Breaking the zone of control so it resets all the building you've done, when it worked just fine before, is not something I hand wave with the beta comment. It's made the beta difficult to test and evaluate, and that's something they need to avoid.

They didn't learn or change anything in their design significantly in FO3. Some of the same balance problems that existed in Oblivion were in FO3. Not to mention the bugs, the performance, or any of that jazz, which were all there. I don't see why I should assume they're going to do things any different this time. The last Beth game I bought I wasn't dissatisfied with after the 20 hour mark was Morrowind. I won't be going near this until well after release.
In Civilization, every tile feels like it matters. Elemental has the city building of MOM but the world design of a HOMM which isn't compatible.
It's interesting you reference HOMM here. I've never really seen a HOMM-like structure to the map myself. I feel you guys have done about as much as you can here, initially. Each tile can affect combat and movement. Each tile is a potential candidate for a site or goodie hut. Some tiles can produce monsters. S

Like most, I'm here to say I feel the patch is a step in the right direction. Once I got the new stuff figured out, I felt like I had more to pay attention to than in previous builds. Sort of. Things I think you guys should focus on next: 1. NOT INTRODUCING ANY NEW STABILITY BUGS. Seriously, I wanted to dig into the new patch, but the ZoC bug pretty much ruined it for me. I know you guys delayed and were between a rock and a hard place, between providing some up

I'm not sure how I caused this to happen. Perhaps it was trying to select another character while the previous one was still moving. But the second character I tried to select, their animation got stuck and they were just twitching in place. I couldn't issue them any move orders. When I selected another character, the stuck one moved of its own volition, in a direction I hadn't told it, and the NEW character I selected became stuck. Clicking the next turn didn't help, I had to hit escape and

Yep. It's making the game very difficult to play right now, impossible if you have instability issues. Having to rebuy all the resources and wait for them to built, just to get back to where you were, starts dragging you down quickly.
