In this way, I feel that you could stick to each individual soldier having its own stats, even if its part of a larger formation. And each weapon has a different range of dots. Like a Spear, Halberd, or Pike could have a 2 (or 3) dot range, and a Gladius or Dagger could have a 1 dot range .... and longswords and Claymores could have (depending) either a 1 or 2 dot range, yet only if there are no obstacles ... while pikes, spears and halberds could have a 2 (or 3) dot range regardless

Or even make it dot based, where a single soldier can stand on 9 points of a square (4 corners, 4 sides, and center) ... so you could theoretically have 9 soldiers crowding around a single tile in the thickest of formations .... and which could mean you could hold several champions on a single tile ... So some units could be fixed ... you made a 20 man phalanx that fills 3 squares wide ... ( or more accurately, 21 man phalanx that is 7 collumns wide) and

well, I do like the Idea of Champions leading armies. In my honor guard and assasin idea, Sovereigns could have the largest honor guard ... and equally I like the idea that the Sovereign could lead the biggest army. Perhaps a Champion can lead 4-> 6 -> 8 -> 10 depending on logistics level while Sovereign can lead 8 -> 10 -> 12 -> 14// or always 10 and then 12 at max logistics // or 6 -> 8 -> 10 -> 12

I like it, just depends on how its Implemented I guess. Another thing would be to have each child born with a "pre-set" personality that prefers X, Y, and Z ... and once the child is born you can choose "I want the child to be raised in X fashion" or some such. Then you can either have a simplistic relationship between the child's personality and the way you choose to raise him ... or you could make things more complex/subtle and less gamey. For instance

The Variety is there, but its there in all possible variations ... thus there is no NET movement towards any one particular direction ... which means Evolution has STOPPED (this should not be surprising to anyone really). That being said, there is a good bit of selection ... but its more on the level of sexual selection than skill based selection. One possible reason why our intelligence has not increased yet we are far more "hairless" than we once were.

Eh, you can move in 6 directions on a Hex, or in 8 directions on a square. Its not that hexes aren't better for organizing space, but I like the variety of choice. It should be necessary, however, to make diagonal moves cost 1.5 movement imho.
