I vote for focusing on the in-game lore and making each faction feel unique.
Personally, I'd rather have a good set of diverse canon races/factions with extensive lore behind them - like the ones in SoTS for example, where each race has its own unique background and its own unique playstyle due to its individual propulsion system. So perhaps if you added faction/race specific techs, spells or some kind of unique but fairly powerful ability to each of the base factions it would help players to distingush between them while also making each faction more appealin
Personally I like a good characterful faction with a suitably indepth back-story to help me with immersion; it makes me feel I have sided with an outlook or ethic and can role-play it accordingly. I could immerse myself in a faction I designed, but for some reason I'd rather have a back-story developed by a writer rather than my own head. I like designing my own factions certainly, but not at the expense of stock choices.
</
Try turning off 'Advanced Lighting' - I know that sorted out the blurry portraits for me.
