SotS has 3 expansions actually, or 2.5 if you don't count Argos as a full one since it didn't introduce a new race. But yes, the game play is dramatically improved over the initial game. My comments on the GC AI have more to do with the decision to go with an open space design, which the AI simply could not handle. Brad even told me why back in the old forums, the AI didn't look at everything in it's scanner range. Meh, if you develope

Neither, Sword of the Stars (and it's expansions) is clearly superior to both. Especially GC2, which becomes trivially easy to beat due to piss poor AI implementation on the strategic level. Then again I don't know what the going prices are for any of those games, so maybe you can afford to just get all of them ;)
SP exists only for you to check out various start strats, and maybe end strats, though the latter is a bit boring as you are just cranking micro to finish research/acquire gems/whatever you are missing. MP is truly excellent, if you are into that sort of thing. The community is pretty solid too, or it was, been over a year since I last did any MP, I don't even know what patch they are on now :p Anyway, if you can handle the low quality gfx,
https://forums.elementalgame.com/393123 A similar system, though incorperating a fatigue stat to allow for better differentiation of weapons and armor. Also gives additional perks to groups, and allows for additional techs to be introduced to fill out the tech tree (at least for warfare) and provide specialization in different forms of combat via research. The WH system is fine for tablet
Great ideas. What I would also suggest is a (small) defense/attack bonus to squads (greek phalanxes were tough because they were groups - taking lancers on 1 to 1 is much, much easier than 100 by 100) and a shock modifier. Seriously, morale has no role in the game whatsoever at this time. Especially cavalry should be able to rout units. Fatigue and morale linking leads to flanking bonus while not even having a flanking modifier: attack them with you
Thanks for the comment Sathar. I'm not sure my system is the 'best' or even 'doable' given the potential code limitations, but I wanted to get it out there before I lost the details ;) Anyway, if the combat system is as moddable as the rest of the game is supposed to be then my hope is that those with an interest in this area will have the mod tools available to make combat as simple or complex as we want :)
https://forums.elementalgame.com/393123 Addresses this issue indirectly by adding another stat, fatigue. Thus you can balance weapons by making them tire your units more quickly, or giving maluses to hitting or dodging. So take your biggest damage weapon, but realize that your unit can only swing it 5 times before their ability to hit anything begins to degrade, as well as their ability t
Check out my overhaul... https://forums.elementalgame.com/393123 Though it doesn't exactly get rid of 1d rolls, it does address the problem in another way.

A proposal to make melee combat more interesting/realistic/balanced Note that this proposal would require some rebalancing in the distribution of unit statistics, as well as the introduction of 3 new unit/item stats. First I will describe the necessary stats for melee combat. Strength (STR): Base damage of a unit. Modifies unit encumbrance (ENC). Modified by unit fatigue (FAT). Dexterity (DEX): Base chance to hit and dodge. M
WHile I can understand where you're going, I don't think making quests/mobs/etc increase with time is good, if for no other reason than predictability. As it is, you have no idea when new things pop unless you're leading the way in adventure tech. If the game simply scaled them up, you could then easily plan for Turn 100, level 3 mobs appear. Doing it dynamically (mobs scale based on some system) could work better for this but then that takes away

As for the current problems, I'm surprised... as of 1.05 I still had a few CTDs, OOM and sudden decline in performance. As of 1.05
The teleport spell should be sov only, it doesn't seem right that you can just jump your SoD around, seems to remove almost all strategy from the game really.

Kudos to you Brad, I knew you'd take the high road here. The internet is the internet, and you have to be painfully careful what you say on it when you're in a position such as you are. I hope you are able to get some good rest and not let all the hoop-la eat at you too much ;) Time heals all wounds, and eventually the craziness will settle down and the merits of the game will be discussed rather than the merits of the release.

I would just read the patch notes (since there already is one) and from them deduce if you think the game is 'ready' enough for your standards. It doesn't matter what people who have the game say, it doesn't matter what people who don' t have the game say. You're the only one who knows what you find acceptable, so if you've taken the time to read about the issues (or non issues depending on your POV), then you can look at the patch logs and see which ones that troubled you got add
I'm somewhat shocked that this kind of combat model isn't already implemented. It seems like it ought to be an obvious thing to separate the "to hit" roll, and the "damage" roll, especially when you have a computer to do all the computation and rolling. It adds a great deal of depth to the model, and increases the choices available to the player. Great post. I hope one of the developers sees it.
