Moiiska is just a civ hater, no real need to engage him in a discussion about that game since he simply doesn't like it. Nothing wrong with not liking it, it's not for everyone's taste, but there's just little point in watching him beat a dead horse over and over.
http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/g/simon-r-green/ One of my favorite 'light' fantasy authors. Blue Moon Rising was just a very fun read, and most of the rest of his works are in a similar vein. Though I've not read his detective stuff since the setting doesn't appeal to me so much. All the Deathstalker books are fun as well, lots of great Sci-Fi ideas.
You guys do know that you can set Civ4 to play at different speeds right? Want a game that finishes in a couple hours? Play Quick, or even with advanced start. Want a game that slows down growth and techs and everything? Play Marathon! (Or Epic is my sweet spot). Want a game that speeds production of units but keeps buildings and techs slow? Make a simple mod yourself. Want a fantasy setting?&nb

I've played GalCivII UE, and I can't stand the sheer minutiae involved in leading an empire. Planetary governors should be able to develop worlds without any input from me, since that's way below my pay grade as supreme executive dictator-for-life of a galactic civilization. It's really a MP game though. The AI is just balls for SP games, though it's still a fun little diversion from time to time.

I know, it's laughable falconne... The elemental fanboys are out in this thread and for some reason they have a bug up their ass that Elemental has to 'beat' civ for whatever stupid reason. Elemental probably will be more complex than civ at some point, of course that's not necessarily a good thing either. So to have a 'good' AI will be more difficult, but honestly, I doubt elemental will have a 'good' AI. It's not as though the AI in
It comes down to standards. If you enjoy the game in it's current state (yes 1.07) then you simply have very low standards. Even Brad has essentially said this. Ok, so it doesn't crash as much anymore (or at all for your rig), but the mechanisms in the game really don't work the way the way Brad wanted them to, the polish was not there (again directly from Brad) the AI is basically useless (again, from Brad), the magic is boring and undiffer

I'm confused. What 'solid concepts' are you all talking about? Because from what I've seen there are 'concepts' but the execution of them is so poor and incomprehensible I don't really see how anyone taking an honest look at the game can call them 'solid'. Even Brad seems to hold this position. Unless you mean something like 'it has tactical combat, and that is a solid concept' or 'it has spells, and that is a solid co
Taking the GC combat mechanics and applying them to Elemental would be a horrible decision. Elemental actually has tactical battles, and ideally/eventually multiple weapon/magic/defense types. Compared to the junk combat (though it worked well enough for simed battles in GC) model of GC2 this would be a major step backwards. To the rest of your mini-rant (because, yeah, that's what it was)... The people who will agree with you are not
Yeah, I've got enough working games to not want the frustration of dealing with 'works in progress' right now. I'm watching MH2 though. I prefer to play minors anyway, but it sounds like most minors are really non playable economy wise in MH2 at this point, so I'll probably just keep on watching it for the time being.
[quote who="Annatar11" reply="63" id="2753147"] I don't really agree with this. Most mechanics are solid, just need a good balance and scaling pass. All the games you listed are purely subjective, too. I played AoW:SM, but I don't really think it's essential for Elemental to model anything from it. I played FFH2, and don't particularly think anything needs to be in Elemental from it, either. It's entirely possible to tweak Elemental's tactical battles to work with the current stat system
I am impressed, Brad and BB. I was hoping you would see it this way after you had some time to distance yourselves from the hecticness of the past month (once you closed the beta down). I'm glad to see that your objectivity does not appear to be impaired. I wonder though, what remedy? Is the game really 'fixable' (well ultimately it is) by patches? Or is a 'recall' more along the lines of what you are thinking.&n
[quote who="BoogieBac" reply="9" id="2752619"]Right below this thread, on the forums list, was another post called "I did not pay to Fix or Finish Elemental", which I beleive is (ironically) the answer to your question. When we put something out, and it gets a 50% dissatisfaction rate on our own forums, that's a HUGE chunk of our customers that feel it wasn't ready to be put out. There's a lot to learn from the release of Elemental, and 'let's make every launch like this one!'
[quote who="Yalbik" reply="23" id="2751936"]Is the GalCiv2 demo a fairly good representation of the game? Just asking, cause I loved MOO and MOO2 (I stayed away from MOO3...which was a good choice says a friend of mine), but I just couldn't get in to the GalCiv2 demo. It seemed that nothing ever happened, and the "universe" seemed really really empty. If I didn't like the demo, is there any chance I'll like the actual game?
[quote who="Jharii" reply="325" id="2751582"] Hey, I resemble that remark! In all seriousness, I really did want this game to "be the one". The review is spot on, sorry. It's just an opinion. Well the text is what you get when you hire 'professional' writers apparently. I wonder if random house is taking any flak from any of this.

Meh... for my money the AI in SotS is by far superior to the AI in GC2, though the tactical battle AI can be a tad predictable, but in any case it's nominally about who has the better ships in the matchup (not always the technologically superior, but if you went heavy beam weapons and they are fielding ships with refractive coatings...). or if you brought your destroyer swarm against their cutting beam cruisers, only to find out that they swapped in some fusion
