Valve simply offers the best platform for developers that want to add things like achievements without having to build it themselves. Gothic 3 is an okay game. The main knocks against it were the bugs, performance issues, and the voice acting, but most people liked the game itself. As a fan of Bethesda, I only played Gothic 3 for a bit and didn't like the style. However, if you are a fan of the Gothic series, it should suit you fine. If you want a more modern version of Gothic, you can try Risen, which is very much in the same mold. And if you haven't played it before, The Witcher is still a very good RPG.
