why would cities require essence to found? it isn't magic (well it might be, but after the 1st one there should be other ways of getting a bunch of people to move to a new location. Its not like 'settlers' are going to stop existing as a concept to those trying to expand a kingdom.)

I agree entirely with the "little forest" idea. I would have suggested the exact same thing. (I would also suggest something other than "field" to be the empty space. Things like rock formations (light rocks, so rough terrain), marsh (or just muddy areas), highlands, rolling hills, and the list goes on. (I vaguely recall a thread on the subject)

I like spells wrecking havoc on terrain and such. In theory a lot of 2D work (and I mean a LOT) could mimic what possibilities exist in a 3D world. I don't really see how he used that example to explain why it wasn't MoM2... but whatever.

I realized another pro for auto-resolve it is that it can help in playing the game with children, who might not actually be able to put up a fight in tactical combat.
