But then so is the display of civilian populations. The last game I can think of that displayed citizens in the crossfire was X-Com. Adding realistic arrow flight mechanics is nothing near jumping the shark. The total war games model them nicely, but you pay for that dynamic with abstractions in other areas.

The only real difference between science and religion is that religion asks for faith and science asks for proof. Faith is simply the act of not asking for proof. I don't have anything against either but I would tend towards believing science before I believe religion. Scientific theories are the best guess that can be made by the sum of human intellect. Creationism is just a guess and is just as valid as the Flying Spaghetti Monster and using Perpetual Motion to generate unlimited po

Reply to Unit Types in WOM Ideas

So templates essentially? Templates are great at condensing information. In MoM for example the "undead" template is really immunity to sleep/paralysis/fear and whatnot all rolled into one. Whenever you see it on something you immediatly know whats going on. What you have to be careful with is making those types a bit too general or too loose. Dungeons and Dragons defines its component creatures using a similar system, but the values it assigns are kind of arbitrary and don't make muc

Still, given that archers get the exact same "shoot arrow" power as heroes they are most likely single units.

Unfortunately the company who made the game has since moved on and seems to be developing exclusively for portables and handhelds. The main website has been shut down as well, along with the forums and main multiplayer server. Its a pity because the game was excellent, even if it did have some quirks. A few patches would have made it perfect but the sales were so bad it kind of got stuck dead in the water.

Well yes, a whole unit of setlers in MoM is represented by a single wagon with tons of health that makes it durable enough to run away. But most units of soldiers were only abstracted in the logistic sense. What you see on the table is what you get. A unit of paladins missing one member is a unit of paladins with one casualty. That one missing paladin doesn't signify a 25% reduction in strength, it just means you started with 4 and now one of them is dead. AoW was kind of conf

That is one of two factors we could use. The first as you mentioned is command. Armies need leadership, without it they simply degrade into a mob. The amount of troops you can keep together in an effective fighting force is limited by your ability to lead it. In the beginning you will probably lead your armies in person but later on you might be able to train or hire skilled generals. The second is logistics. Armies must be fed and watered and all that food and water has to be
I'd just like to point out that it's kind of counterproductive to state so definitively pure speculation as if it's fact. We've only been privileged to mere glimpses of what essence will be and how it will be used, and none of those glimpses have mentioned anything about military units (besides heroes), and whether or not we'll even be able to imbue them with essence, let alone choose how much to use.
There was some talk a while
I wouldn't say that the limit was arbitrary or had anything to do with the engine. The number of units in a stack was the number of units you could bring into a battle. It was probably a very conscious decision to have a maximum of nine units per tactial battle for each side.
But it is arbitrary. It doesn't matter how much space the unit takes up or how many figures there are in each unit. The limit is 9 per stack. Put 36 paladins

I don't like map spells though. If you cast "fireball" on my army stack. Am I to believe to that you just cast a fireball big enough to cover a square kilometer or more? If you can throw those around once a day then tactical battles would be over in seconds. Spell effects should not cover the entire army unless you had enough energy to make your spell big enough at a tactical level. This isn't so bad in AoW because each unit is a single unit, one spearmen is just one spearmen. S

Stack limits are simply an arbitrary measure of how many "units" can fit onto the same map tile. In MoM map tiles are squares of nebulous size, the unit limit is 9. It doesn't matter if that means 9 dragons or 9 units of spearmen, they take up the same amount of room on the map. The whole reason the limit was included at all probably had to do with the limitations of the engine. With our modern computers it might be possible to up that limit to the point where any cap is unreachable or nearly

Tolkien elves pretty much started the trope. The distinction between types was very vague thought. The high elves were immortal and if any were killed thier soul would return to the land over the sea. The wood elves were "here in middle earth already" and are distinct from them. It was all very confusing.

You complain about killer stacks and then suggest that killer stacking should be the norm and not the exception? The reason we have killer stacks at all is that there is a cap on army size. Its possible to overwhelm elite troops by drowning them in grunts. After a point its possible to deploy so many units that the skills and capabilities of your enemy are meaningless. Once the cap is there this is no longer possible. Bleh too many uses of "possible", anyone got a better word [e digi

Newtonian physics always have an upper limit in a game setting. Otherwise it could happen that you accelerate to such a ridiculous degree that it will take you hours just to turn around and go home. And thats if you don't run out of fuel first. This looks interesting but if the controls aren't up to snuff I will probably pass. Struggling with limited flight controls is one thing thta puts me off most sim games.

But why would you want to spread your game installations over many partitions? If you lose the main partition and its OS registry you will invalidate all of those installs and recovering them means reinstalling all over again. The whole reason Steam installs everyone to one folder is to localize it. That folder contains 100% of the game and if you copy it and move it to another install of Steam on a seperate partition or even another computer it will work exactly as it did on the orig

While you are at it, add the ability to record time-lapse replays of the strategic portion of the game. Big scope strategy games aren't much of a spectator sport because they take so long, but if you could speed up the action it would be neat to watch people take over the world.

Does the singleplayer campaing work on XP without too much hoop jumping? BZ1 is a game I missed out on the first time but I enjoyed the heck out of the demo.

Hard AIs should not pounce on every mistake at lightspeed. For one thing its not entirely realistic, and secondly if they wait you may compound that mistake with another.

- The third type of bolt requires a bit of a science lesson. This type of bolt is meant for extended range shooting and what makes it work is the same science that runs track and field javelin toss. There is an aerodynamic principle called "angle of attack". In laymans terms, the higher the angle of attack, the more an object such as an airfoil "bites" into oncoming air and the more lift it produces. To see how this works just stick your hand out the window the next time you ride a ca

The bolts fired vary in construction depending on what you plan to do with them. But all of the bolt types share two characteristics. - Each bolt has at least 4 fins, but they are not arranged into an X pattern. Rather the X is split into two diagonal lines and these are set slightly apart on the bolt shaft. This is done because bolts with X fins can't fit into a vertical stack without bending the fins. By dividing the fins into two, you end up with two stacks of diagonal fins. <

I think research should not be entirely random. If you're a chemist trying to make fizzy soda, its *possible* that you discover gunpowder in the process. But more likely you will just learn to make fizzy drinks. There should be different random events just for research. For example you could have the out of the blue "lucky discovery" where you get a free tech. A "suprise innovation" where you discover a new tech partially researched" and stuff like that. At the same time you c
