You alt-tab back and forth (without crashing) or have a dual-monitor setup?
Because we all know it doesn't take mere seconds to submit a post to a message board. And this being one of only a

I thought the Civ 4 tutorial was awful myself. First of all, Sid Meier has the blandest voice imaginable; and secondly, it showed practically nothing. "Place a city here... move your units like this... here's the city screen... O.K. now go have fun!" Frankly, I'd rather have no tutorial than one as poorly implemented as that.

They delivered on their promises, plenty of new functionality was there, the strategic depth and a capable AI that gave you the challenge needed to play the game. This means that even when slowdowns or crashes affected you, you would curse, but you'd still be firing it up again, at 3 in the morning, because you so want to get back into it.
You

The problem is that the term "beta" is thrown around too casually and with little regard for what it actually means.

I still have a hunch that if Elemental had Sid Meier's name on the box and all other things were equal, it would have been given a far more charitable reception. A lot of people don't know about them because they weren't quite as "in your face" as a crash to desktop.
