I like your idea for #3. Ground invasions, and all that would entail, would add a lot more depth to the game. With three expansions planned, maybe someday we will see an alternative to simply bombarding a planet into oblivion. Troop ships would seem to be the logical vessel to incorporate. They would have to be big, slow and defenseless...making them fat targets for defending forces.

For me, it's the fleet-centric nature of the combat. Many sci-fi games never really create the complex reality of fleet warfare, both in terms of fleet composition considerations and the broader strategic decisions of when and where to commit (i.e., risk) a fleet. Only Sins makes me want to watch Midway or Sink the Bismark (or the BG season one movie). [e digicons]:jafo:[/e] That says a lot about how well Sins captures the realities of fleet warfar
That was a cool video! Nice work!

That's what we fans are for! [e digicons]^_^[/e] Ironclad have their hands full making our sci-fi fleet combat dreams become a reality. It is up to us to help them spread the word. I've always been tempted to make a Sins video. I never made a video before, and am completely unfamiliar with Fraps and what have you. But I think I'll try it one day. I even have a song already picked out for the background music. Is there a movie making FAQ a
That sounds really interesting! I just purchased X3TC and discovered that that game has marine boarding parties as well.
I just want BIGGER capital ships. Ships that don't have maybe ten guns on the port side, but ten thousand. Ships with shields so strong and armor so thick even nukes don't do the trick.I want to see people flying out of the ships when they're damaged! I want to choose exactly where my marines land, and it should affect what they see when they fight! And I am not talking about pre-rendered video clips and numbers showing you the result of a captur
Ya know, it seems all these niche sims each have about 70-80% of the fomula correct, but miss out on tying the package up into a nice whole. I guess that's where a professional publisher comes in. Those guys often have a good critical eye for tightening up a game and reminding devs what they like is not necessarily what makes a game good. It's also funny and interesting that most of the reviews for these games begin with: "Judging from the letters we
Thanks for the list! I'll check them out! I never tried it, but there is another game called Dark Horizon , but I think that is more of a fighter type game...again. [e digicons]>:([/e]
Quoting wbino, reply 12 It amazes me that publishers of pc games dont grab some of the best known franchises and make a ton of money. Who would not buy a new wing commander, tie fighter, etc...... Simulators NEVER repeat NEVER make tons of money, they're niche markets, especially because people interested in one type of simulator (eg Spaceship) often aren't interested in another (eg Heli
Wow, never heard of the X series before. I just checked out the most recent - it does sound interesting, but it also sounds more like an EVE one man ship setup than commanding an entire warship with a full crew. Am I wrong? ***Edit: I looked more into X3: Terran Conflict and really liked what I saw. It reminds me very much of a single player EVE. I went to the website to buy it and, alas, it is listed as "sold out," not to mention eve
I don't even remember that game. I looked it up and saw that it came out around eight years ago - not exactly the "new" game I was looking for. [e digicons][/e] It sounded good, though.
I was on another site and we were discussing the types of games PC gamers want but can't have because no one is making them anymore. After scratching my head, I realized that one genre we haven't seen in a long time is the starship simulator. By that, I mean a game that puts you in command of a full-fledged, space-going warship. The last good one I played was back on the 16-bits and was called Starfleet C
Great find! I think I like some of the older ship designs better. They seem more...menacing.
Merry Christmas to you and everyone here as well!
I encountered the same problem and discovered the same solution. If it isn't already stickied, it should be.
Professional game devs rarely engage in a public round table discussion concerning a particular game's development. I have no doubt that the devs are reading everything, analyzing the problems/solutions in house, and only contacting certain beta testers in private for elaborations and what-not. Making a game is not a pretty process, so most devs keep it in the kitchen. [e digicons][/e]
I've been playing the GAlCiv series for years but have never played through a campaign. The story never mattered that much to me. I made my own as I played in the sandbox. I'd do TA in the sandbox and dabble in the story later.
Same here. I never got the point of story-driven games. The fun of playing a game is making your own story! [e digicons]:cylon:[/e]
I'm in the same boat. From what I understand, if you want to follow the story-drive campaign, start with Dreadlords and work your way forward with Da and then TA. However, if you don't care about the story-driven campaign (i.e., you just want to play a sandbox game), then I would recommend just playing TA as that has all the chrome in one package. I think this is how it works.
I have to get back to the game. I received GalCiv2 as an early Christmas gift and that game has monopolized my time. My dream game would be the fleet action of Sins combined with the planetary development and custom ships of GalCiv2.
Thanks for all the advice, guys! I'm looking forward to writing my first AAR! Stardock are currently working on Elemental - War of Magic, scheduled to come out early 2010, and I guess GCIII will follow that (ie 2012ish) I'm sort of glad to hear that. I was just positive that as soon as I downloaded the GalCiv 2 bundle, I would read an announcement that GalCiv3 is slated for January 2009.

I tried GalCiv 1 and wasn't that impressed with it either. Not that there was anything wrong, just that it seemed more like a board game than a computer game. I just received the GalCiv2 bundle pack for Christmas (early [e dig

It didn't have DRM, and neither did it whine about piracy. All that in a year where everyone argued PC gaming is crap? For those achievements alone, it deserves being the PC Game of the Year.
