My mention of the old 8-bit game Dragon Riders of Pern jogged my memory about something. I recall that in that game, there were certain social events that you could use to your advantage. For example, I remember that when one of your dragon eggs was about to hatch, you could invite representatives from other kingdoms to the party. If the party went well, you could improve your relations with them. If it went bad, there was a negative effect. I would love
I'm curious as to other aspects of 'The Living World' concept, and what everyone thinks about them...my ultimate dream is for Elemental to be a true 'Fantasy Kingdom Sim' and not just a strategy game with fantasy artwork. I want to feel like I am building one of the awesome kingdoms from the great works of fantasy, and see that kingdom really live, guided by my decisions and the events that take place during the game.
I ge
I really like the OP's idea (and some of the subsequent modifications, such as tying prestige to diplomacy). Let's face it: in most games "diplomacy" is really nothing more than bartering. Sure, I guess you could make the case that giving this for that is a form of diplomacy, but it is a primitive form of diplomacy at best. In the real world, diplomacy can be just as much about shared ideas, goals and mutual respect as it is about immediate gratification. What is more,
You guys are matching my circumspection as well. There is just too much unknown at this point. However, from what I can gather, it seems that EoN will have a single player mode that is designed to allow new players to level up and get good loot before getting thrown into the mix. That should help level things out. One thing I don't like is that it seems EoN will not have any <a href="http://forums.endofnations.com/showthread.php?43-Just-in-case-you-reconsider-the-inf
I stumbled across this game yesterday and I've got to admit that it sounds interesting. I really like the look of the battles, sort of like a mix between C&C and World in Conflict with a little SupCom thrown in. Even though I am tired of RTS games, the mix of two different genres - RTS and MMO gaming - could prove fun...or a terrible mess. [e digicons][/e] Guess we'll see in 2011! I'm assuming that we can import other races the same way we'll be able to eventually import maps, icons, etc. If this makes it easier to allow for custom race creation I'm all for it. Let the developer flesh out the game, let the gamers flesh out the content!
I agree. In GalCiv, I don't think I ever played with a stock race as I much preferred to make a custom one from game to game.&nb
I find Chess to be my favorite go-to game because it is the perfect game if you don't have a lot of time. I primarily play correspondence chess with a 10-14 day per move time control. I rarely (if ever) actually take that many days to make a move, but it is nice to have that time cushion for when things get busy. CC is great because there never is any pressure to "get in a turn." If somebody is interested in getting back into chess, I recommend Chess.com.

BTW: did you ever hear of Camel Spiders? Google it. (Yes, yes...I know they are actually closer to being scorpions than spiders....but they freak me out nonetheless! Imagine finding one of those in your house! They're as big as house cats and twice as mean! [e digicons]8C[/e] )
That was quite an interesting post! I also agree with your sentiments. In fact, when it came for Shelob in Jackson's LotRs, the ultimate design they wound up using was the least scary one IMHO (you can see the range of ideas on the special edition DVD). But I believe that was intentional. I think when it comes to movies and games, directors/devs don't want to make spiders as frightening and repulsive as they are in real life because you might well chase away

I like Civ, but I played the original way back when to death, so now it is all old hat for me. Elemental seemingly will have everything I ever wanted in a medieval-based 4X game. The only thing that scares me: will it be so good that it starts to eat into my chess time (the world's best 'medieval'
I was a little disappointed with the X-COM FPS Announcement. I sure it will be a great game it's own right, though it wasn't the announcement I was hoping for. But since STARDOCK is creating a spiro successor to Master of Magic, namely, ELEMENTAL, (and it's turning out to be great if you asked me..) is there any chance they could do the same with X-COM? That would rock, and I'd but some cash into it to get that going. I've got 5 bucks lying around
How can you guys forget about Alternate Reality ?!? Classic! [e digicons]:karma:[/e]
I am glad to see Diplo/Dynasty took the lead in gameplay interest. Quite surpising, actually.
I'm willing to bet you that NASA is just fine with this decision. Going way back to the '80s I can recall NASA promising to go back to the Moon or go to Mars "in the next ten years". It is a promise that has been renewed every ten years for the last 30! Truth is, NASA doesn't not want to undertake some risky mission, especially one that will tie up a huge portion of their resources. Even going back to the start of the space program, NASA (then NACA) officials had to be
I'm hoping SD's comments so far are just their starting point, be it for the design process or even just for the vanilla release. Let's face it: we virtual warriors [e digicons]:cylon:[/e] have played countless strategy games. If you killed off one kingdom, you've killed off a hundred. Sure, the chrome Elemental is bringing to the 4X genre is very exciting, but we will still be dealing with a 4X game and all the implies. I think Elemental could go way beyond

Most of these extra features are just bait to get you to pre-order the game or purchase it upon release. If they were essential to the game, they would be included in every version. Just ignore it and buy the game if/when you are ready. Sooner or later, all this extra stuff will be made available as part of a "gold" package or as free or modded-in content.
I love the picture with the the pewter markers on the map. I am one of the few people still disappointed that TW moved away from the original 'tabletop' map view with markers to the "realistic" strategic map. This whole disclosure about the effect of dynatic politics in the game is what has caught my attention. Prior to that, I wasn't all that interested in Elemental, but now I can't wait! I guess part of the reason is that so many medieval games focus strictly on building things and killing the other factions. Sure, that can be fun, but I always wanted a game that provided equal focus on court intrique and personality. Crusader Kings tried this successfully, but that game

It's funny that you mention that because I was having related thoughts after reading The Fallen's description: Of The Fallen When the powers strove for dominance before the cataclysm, some felt that men were too random and too unpredictable to be of use to them. Some of these powers selected men of cunning, brutality and might. They created an “improved” or “idealized” version of men that came to be know
