I like these ideas, but I'd like to see them implemented within a broader random event system (something I still think this game needs, though not until beta 3)
Couldn't agree more. The event system could really expand the story level of the game.

Not if anyone in the city has a Troll Charm (Tactical Health Regeneration). Defenders can be strong enough to fend off hordes of enemies. And then they heal the next turn. Plus they level after each battle. Looking through the catapult xml I saw a siege function in addition to ranged attack. Could this be something that is already being implemented? Any beta testers feel like testing this out?

It should be possible but not the best strategy. The only reason the Huns were so effective was because they could vastly outnumber their enemy. More than that, it's a fun tactic and I want to use it. I also want the AI to use it. Just need to make sure it is balanced.

You could have this be a new Path in the leveling system. Path of the Arachnid. It can have Path of the Mage as a prereq and a level requirement for the next level of spells. Keep in mind that all summons will likely be getting bonuses from other sources. You can have a global bonus for instance that makes all summons get +1 level. It is better to try and balance things after the beta is closer to release. The best option right now would to look at the current spider d

It's not that many bonuses. To get Fast, Traveler's Boots, Impulsive, Dagger, Horse, and two of the many other Initiative bonuses I only need to be level 5. Then I have double the Initiative and +3 moves on any regular unit. So a level 5 unit can now defeat every trained melee unit in the game without taking damage. It doesn't matter what level the trained unit is. Add a Wind Shield and even archers can't stop him. There needs to be some balance here. I am fine with a level 10

Right, it is a balance issue with melee. The Movement*Initiative balance is way off. It is too easy to level a hero to the point of getting the two moves necessary to attack and then run farther away than the other unit can reach. It needs to be part of the discussion because there is no feedback from the devs yet on whether or not this is being fixed. Archers are a more complicated problem because kiting is at the core of the ranged strategy. Shortbows are fine to shoot with no movem
Half of the kiting problem?
Kiting can be done with any weapon. Half of the current problem is that archers make it so easy. The other half falls somewhere between weapon differentiation and the movement*initiative balance. Melee kiting only can happen when the kiter is able to move away before the other army can retaliate. This is generally a symptom of the kiter having ridiculous amounts of Moves and Initiat

After much discussion about kiting in a different thread, I am going to have to make a list come beta 2 of battle tactics and counters. Then I will allow each Path to counter some of those tactics. The biggest worry is that the AI will not be able to use my counters if they require the purchase of specific weapons. I am also not sure how it will counter any tactic I use in battle if my units are multipurposed. Alot is riding on the AI being smart enough to counter things. Frogboy has indicate

Just to be clear, bows have different ranges: Shortbows = 6 Longbows = 8 Yew Longbows = 9 Nerfing archers with a move then shoot will only solve half the problem. Weapons need some differentiation all around, but I am waiting until I have the Beta 2 to really go into it. A longbow would logically take longer to fire and move. Maybe shortbows should not have the move then shoot nerf, but longbows should. If you want to kite, you will have to suffe

I know. I just had nothing for Civilization besides that. There is currently only the tech victory option in Civilization. Maybe they would use a diplomacy tech to force a peace treaty without the player's consent. The treaty would give the city over to the AI and kick the Sov out. There is no indication that we are getting any new siege mechanics so I am trying to think inside the box.

Catapults could do extra damage against units in a city. That would be the Warfare way to win. It seems like Fb has the magic part down. Hordes of spearmen would probably be the Civilization choice. Do we only want three?

You could give those Gilden some bonuses to mounted warfare. The most noble conquest is the bond between man and horse.

100 Initiative for all units would be great. Then each trait could offer a +3 or +5 bonus without breaking the game. Or just limit the bonuses we already have. Impulsive is pretty unbalanced for mages and warriors. I would make it an Assassin prereq. From previous experience with changes of this kind, I have to assume that the most effective, simplest solution will be chosen. None of these solutions look significantly simpler than just teaching the AI how to kite.

I meant no offense. Limited arrows are an idea from old games and I have always found them silly. I didn't consider it anyone's idea. Some ideas are silly though, nothing wrong with being silly. They would have to be some really thick arrows if only six can it in a quiver. Just saying. Plus, what the heck am I supposed to do with archers after they run out? [e digicons]o_O[/e]

Why not have catapults be the solution? They don't serve much of a purpose currently.

This is actually an important post for me. The goal of my Ivory Towers mod is to make this exact situation a common happenstance for a wizard-king. Your keep is nearly invincible, but you lack the power to dominate the map. Instead you must hold up in our tower and send parties out on quests to garner the ancient power of this realm. If you had installed Ivory Towers, this situation would be just one step in a larger plan. You can stall the enemy at your gates as your minions move to his terr

I agree with Blackmantle. Kiting is only a problem when Initiative and Movement are so powerful. This needs to be fixed before kiting can be dealt with. Fatigue and limited arrows are the worst ideas I have seen. Horses can battle for hours without fatigue. If anything, the heavily armored humans that everyone here is trying to protect should lose Initiative while horses continue to run circles around them. And limited arrows is just silly. What general sends an archer unit into battle with 6

Even Tolkien noted that elves are more dexterous and that hobbits were excellent climbers. Why would races not be significantly different? You can make your own races. The problem is that it is not clear to the newer users. It also seems like they tried to balance the stats, when they should have looked at balancing the effects of those stats. -1 or +.5 to damage is pretty irrelevant. It doesn't need to factor into unit designs at all. I would like to see some more meaningful ability diff

Being on a hill could offer increased range and accuracy for archers . That way kiters have to enter their range to attack. I do this in Shogun 2. I would never mention such a thing, except that I am already hoping to add this in a tactical mod. But if you feel like it works for the core game, it's all yours.

I would say Lawful evil because they hide behind the laws, always seeking to maximize profit at the expense of the game itself. They work from behind the scenes, much as the Sith, waiting for their moment to sell the biggest game in history to every gamer. It will be bad enough to turn every gamer off gaming for all eternity, selling millions of copies and making them the primary economic force in the Solar system. Then they will turn it into a movie.

Is there any chance Frogboy can give us a better idea of how the AI will function when it comes to designing units and leveling/equipping heroes. We've racked our brains to find some human side solutions. Now we need to know how good the AI will be. -Can the AI respond to losing to me because I have slow, heavy melee units by building mounted archers and kiting? -Can the AI utilize abilities in unit design to counter kiting? -Can the AI choose to level a

I am a linguist. I speak Russian fluently and grew up with Spanish and English. I feel every American has a duty to serve the country in some way. Mine is language fortunately because I am a terrible shot. : ) I also need to get on the G.I. Bill to finish my bachelor in Russian. We may have all that industry but we don't mind cutting a near graduate loose by cutting financial aid. I plan to go into Cryptography. I am hoping that my skills and education will put me ahead.
