I was playing Elemental recently on a couple systems. The first was my desktop PC: 4gb ram, fairly low expectations for not OOM crashing. Like I had expected, it crashed after about 2 hours on a large map. However, I then went to a PC at my college's Game Development Lab. These PCs are pretty much top of the line: 6gb of RAM with an Nvidia 480gtx GPU and an 8 core i7 930 chip to top it all off. Curious as to Elemental's memory usage, I kept task manager up on the other monitor while p

Gah, are the interweb tubes clogged again?
I can snipe people with a handgun in Far Cry 2 from so far away their heads are a single pixel. Whereas with a gamepad, I can barely hit something using the spray and pray method from 5 meters away. There's a reason console game weapons have a melee mode whereas most PC games don't.
The Portal 2 trailer is awesome. @ the Steam haters: Don't even start. I'll buy this even if I have to run Outlook, BitTorrent and Notepad all at once in the background while simultaneously being logged into facebook and hulu to play it.
Hey, don't dis notepad, notepad is awesome and extremely useful! But I think we can put our differences behind us, for science, you monster. Couldn't resist. :P
I hope FIFA bans the Vuvuzela. I don't mind the buzzing sound as much, but there are reports that it can cause hearing damage, as well as the fact that the players complain that they can't concentrate because of the buzzing. People say that we need to "respect" other cultures (typical politcal correctness BS), but this is the WORLD Cup, not the South Africa cup. The rest of the world doesn't have a tradition of tens of thousands of

There are 7 visible on most gates, with 8 and 9 being on the very bottom of the ring and almost always obscured by the base on which it is mounted. Incidentally, I found a more recent photo of that fort (I knew it was there
Put me down for a turn then. Hopefully I will remember...
When's the next available slot?
Ya, it takes usually between a week and a month to understand the game enough to not die horribly from starvation or thirst. But for entertainment value, it just can't be beat. Here's a visualizer image of one of my most ambitious forts, complete with 3 pyramids, a somewhat complete colloseum (right side) and a stargate tribute! I had quite a bit of fun with that map; I knew I was going to be bu
I'd caution you guys to not make city management TOO complex - the focus should be on strategy and not micro-management of cities, in my opinion. You start requireing a lot of forethought on city building and it might bog the game down.
This is a turn based game; micro-managing cities should be done as the player is not rushing for time.
I can confirm as well; Zooming out then back in again seems to fix it.
No, its still thursday at Stardock. They were just working so fast lately relativistic effects kicked in, slowing down their time relative to ours.
ITS UP!
Seriously folks, when people say Dwarf Fortress has a learning curve like a cliff face, they aren't exagurating. Use the wiki or you will be completely lost. "It's almost like a strange form of insanity." That is also a pretty good all around description of DF.
In case of nerve cells you can't have cells splitting, since the nervous connections are what makes us ourselves. Nerve cells don't multiply and nearly no new nerve cells are created when we become adults. Making nerve cells multiply would be a recipe for disaster I think. Instead, you would have to stop the aging process of the single cell itself. I have no clue about how to go about doing such a thing, though. My knowledge on the issue

I assume that this is supposed to be "mark my rage."
No, definately range. Makes more sense. Means it lives in a magma-scarred hellscape of an area.
Just use the ASCII long enough and your brain actually starts interpretting the objects as making sense and sometimes even looking like the real objects. :D Take the 3x3 grid of characters for the still: once you understand that ~ is some sort of liquid and the division sign is a barrel, it makes perfect sense. It looks like a barrel with a tap coming out from it with liquid flowing from said tap. Obviously a still! It grows on you. When you are just starting out, don't think of it as
Does this by any chance occur only when hitting end turn?
Prepare to lose a weekend: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=41896.0 As for my stories, I had a fort saved by what can only be described as the dark knight from monty python("It's only a flesh wound!"). You see, I was carving out a hall deep underground, when all of a sudden my digging was interrupted when I stumbled across an underground river. As these things tend to be, it was full of all sorts o
Good luck to you! And may your Fun come in packages big enough to be crazy and small enough for it to result in epic tales!

Ya, I gave that link for a reason... For me, it shows up in Chrome just fine, but not in IE.
Ah, I was talking about this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Warwick#Project_Cyborg Although I guess it was in his arm, rather than his brain.

Look at our technology now compared to 100,000 years ago. Then think about now compared to 50,000 times that amount of years. Ya, we have nothing to worry about when it comes to the sun expanding. The only things which could currently pose any risk to human life and the technological advancement which comes with it is a very large asteroid strike or a nuclear war. The risk of the first is diminishing rapidly as even private companies begin making the jump into space. The second w
