I'm not against McGuffins, but I think they're far too obvious and too overused nowadays, especially in science fiction and fantasy. It seems like out of every two stories one of them has to do with some artifact that drives the plot. One of the things that I like about strategy games is that the plot is self-motivating and doesn't rely on McGuffins. I guess the kind of stories I like are where the characters are self-motivated rather than simply reactive.

I'm going to replay this game. It's awesome. Maybe I'll actually put it on "hard".
Yesterday I was experimenting with Gimp and trying a few new techniques, and I came up with this. A good spy or saboteur portrait. What do you guys think?
Fae are really interesting and under-used in games. I was expecting the seelie and the unseelie courts to be the two different factions but fae as refugees is also interesting. But, you should consider the unseelie court because evil fae are really awesome. Hmm you might consider reflavoring the palaces from being "world trees". Spamming out "world trees" just doesn't sound good.
(OK, I got an Internship, so I'll have less time to work on this. However, I'm still steadily doing stuff, which is a good sign. I was especially stressed this week so my picture is especially bad.
Verdania has a great back-story, Will. Well done indeed my friend.
Thanks! I (was/am) going to set a novel in the Dark Republic universe before I decided to make a mod of it, so the universe is fairly well developed and thought out.
You could have a faction with it's main schtick being living building... that would be interesting.
Hmm... I've downloaded the ArmA 2 demo so I'll see what that's about, but I'm getting so many votes for TFC2 that I guess I'm compelled to try it. My internship just came through so I feel like I deserve something [e digicons]:D[/e]
I like the structures that are actually living things... hehehe. Reminds me of the Dragon Roost from Warcraft 2.
So I got fed up with Battlefield Heroes the other day. It's too bad because it was a fun game, but the fact they're selling weapons that give paying players the edge is a little more than I can tolerate. So I loaded up Half-life 2 Deathmatch and all the "team" servers were weird roleplaying games. Not something I really care to do right now. So I don't know where to get my fix of team fps action. Is there a game that's not too expensive, that people still play, that's fun? Battlefield
Ok so it is still basically 3.5 so I can use resources from both Pathfinder and 3.5 without having to change the game much?
That is what it boils down to, yes.
Quoting MagicwillNZ, reply 26 And besides, Pathfinder is just an awesome system. What is Pathfinder?
Pathfinder is basically DnD 3.75. Basically refines 3.5 and solves a lot of the problems I had with it. I like Pathfinder a lot.
Mmm, I wouldn't say that half-orcs are a basic race (and the other race they didn't do were gnomes, and no one cared much about that). Draconians, tieflings and several types of elves are probably as old or more than half-orcs...
That's not true. I have players who played gnomes. Not my cup of tea but I see their role in the gameworld. It's not even so much which classes are "older" (half-orcs, btw, were in 1st edition, and beat out Draconians, tieflings, and several ty
I have to say that your thread is 'inspirational' and makes me start my own thread with my mod. I envy you that you can draw such paintings/sketches - I could never make anything more than transformed bitmap (masks, filters, etc.). Probably I will try modify the game mechanics and maybe AI, but I will post a thread, only when I am sure I want to implement some feature. Such system introduces yet another randomness into the game - i.e., winner win be determined once more by a dice roll. Why is that, you ask? Let's assume we have two leaders: Aaa & Bbb. Aaa was spawned not far away from a nest of spiders, while Bbb landed somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Aaa was killing those pesky
But I do insist that if there is no "constructive uncertainty" in the DM's decision making, the players end up spending a lot of time "guessing what the DM is thinking" whether they are good at avoiding metagaming or not.
I agree with this statement. That is sort of the weakness with storytelling in general, since almost all stories have a predictable arc. This is why I encourage my players to pursue their own goals, so that they take up some of the "creative burden" th
Well, if there isn't some degree of uncertainty, then it just becomes the DM's novel--- why bother even having players at all? If the players start to realize that the DM is simply building a world around them, rather than just representing a world, the game tends to lose it's flare.
I disagree strongly. I do run basically a sandbox game with only very broad goals, but I never roll randomly for elements. I do this by having enough detail that I have some sort of
I have always preferred the linear probability models for combat, because combat is where crazy and unlikely stuff should happen. Having played with both GURPS (3d6) and DnD (d20) quite a bit, I can say that the d20 model makes for much more satisfying combat and the 3d6 model is just far too consistant.
