Elemental would be an amazing platform for a tactical RPG a la Final Fantasy Tactics. If the MMORPG idea is going to be feasible, we need to see if the 32 player limit is hardcoded or moddable. If it's hardcoded, it's going to be difficult to have real persistent RPG if it's continually frustrating to people just to log on during peak hour. And then you've got to handle server costs too.
My 2 cents - separate the gameplay aspect from the realism aspect, and let the game-play drive the decision. It's a fantasy fictional game and those are written in reverse order of importance.
Granted it is a fantasy game, at the same time reality has a lot of inspirational material. Detailed models do provide a lot of emergent strategy and simply looking at what would happen "in real life" gives us reasons why particular strategies would and would not work. An

My worry with the current system is I'm not entirely sure how unit variety will arise. My worry is that players will simply try to max out Attack & Defense rather than have varied army builds. For example, if halberds have a higher attack rating than axes, would people ever use axes again? I'm not explaining myself very well. Without really knowing what kind of special abilities we can expect at this point, I'm just a little worried that we'll see armies filled with the optimal At
No beta this week. Between my trip to San Francisco last week to meet with the media and Memorial Day, the AI isn’t far enough along to be included for a public beta. But if it makes you feel better, we’re playing it a lot internally. There’s been a ton of questions on the forums so let me go through them here:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

What gives me particular hope for Shogun II is the back-to-basics philosophy. Makes me feel that they might be returning to the fundamentals of tactics and strategy that Shogun embodied. I haven't played Shogun in a while but I remember it had fairly challenging battles... although I may have just been a shittier player back then. They really overreached with Empire and I hope with Shogun they'll concentrate on solid gameplay.

Another game he enjoyed was the original Starflight, back in the 1980's. I know very little about Starflight, but he played it quite a bit in the day.
Supreme Commander isn't anything compared to Supreme Commander:Forged Alliance. I recommend that FAR more then the original Sup Com. The pace has been quickened a LOT and MassFab farms aren't the only way to go.
Good to know, thanks.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!
Have you looked into Sins of a Solar Empire, Warcraft III, or Supreme Commander? Given the list of games you've provided, I think any (or all three) of these would work well for him.
Hmm I think he thought Warcraft III was a little strange. I don't think he quite got the RPG aspects of it and it was too different from Warcraft II for his tastes. Other than that, I'm downloading

So my dad has taken a new IT job. Thing is, it's in Iraq, and he worries he's going to go crazy. The man is not a fan of deserts, he isn't even a fan of the war, but that's an entirely different subject. Thing is, he's going to need something to play in the long hours where he's on base and has nothing to do. I'm looking for a game recommendation, preferably a solid multiplayer game so that dad has someone to play with. He likes a strange motley of games, so he doesn't have particular

That being said, if there are the "obvious" techs I go for, it's gotta be "farming". Other than that, Elemental is the first game where I'm not struggling

Sounds interesting, but I don't know how you'd execute it nor what it'd contribute. I'd rather use the development resources to improving other parts of the game.

I'm curious about how potential expansions will influence multiplayer. More importantly... what are those white people below the dragon? They look like ghosts. Why is the PS3 the new platform for high-budget high-brow adventure games? I would've thought that was the PC's territory. Also where in the hell is The Longest Journey 3?

The "Winner Take All" and win in N moves is not an idea I like. If you're going to implement something like that, I'd much rather have a objective-based tactical battle where you want hold certain victory areas to win. I'm a big fan of victory areas in general, they really cut down on abusive tactics and force players to use more balanced and interesting strategies. It also allows for Pyrrhic victories and so that victors aren't purely the ones who take the fewest casualties. I als
