yeah, I don't think that works. How do you sell the goods or buy new supplies? Remember most of the time they didn't capture chests of gold. and even if you did those ships can't just sail into port anymore then I can drive a Bradley fighting vechile with the machine gun turret to work every day... I'm going to get pulled over... likewise you pull into a port it's going to be owned by someone... and that someone is going to need some papers that authoriz

The one thing that I don't quiet get in this game is the distances are not being exploited. One thing that is really neat about the concept of space battles is that real ones would happen at extreme range. And would have to use some kind of lightspeed weapon (or faster if possible) or guided missile. Tactically furthermore the ability to dodge or hide would probably be better defense then any kind of armor. If we can put a nuclear warhead into a basketball sized sphere then any missile could be

Pirates should always be outnumbered and outgunned by governments... because historally they always have been. Err... Pirate ships in the past often outgunned the government ships. In fact it was often the case that when a ship was commondired that the pirates would enhance the firepower and thus out power the same class of ship in a governments Navy. <br/

Did a bit more research and they were only 4 knots faster in the "dreadnought" era which is when they were built. Which is closer to what I thought the difference was... I knew they were a little faster but didn't think it was much. Still they were designed to be faster and were given extra large engines for the purpose. So you're still right... I'm just not as completely clueless as I thought I was... <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Smile.gif" border=0 align="absmi

I was wrong and you are right. I looked it up. They were about 8 knots faster on average and were specifically designed to be faster. They had larger engines just to accommodate that feature. I didn't know that.

schem minus the tier three super weapons (artillery primarily as the nukes have a powerful counter) and experimental units beyond tier three it is very easy to turtle. Tier 2 weapons especially with shielding are effective against most attacks... even if you launch a big attack they can have multiple layers of shielding and task engineers to the shields to extend their life. Furthermore, with a good airforce it's hard to get anything really nasty close to a base. Battleshi

It's not actually the OS's fault. There is nothing that forces the programmers to put data outside of the install directory Yes, a programmer could create a THOUSAND folders on your linux machine if you oked the installation. it's the same thing. Info that really should just be in one place is scattered all over the damn place for no reason. The only reason I can think to put stuff in a different folder is for different users. So fine... do that... then

Everyone here keeps saying balance this and balance that, but you can never really achieve a good state of balance without completly removing all desire for anyone to use a super weapon. What I am saying is that the amount of destruction has to be equal to the cost of building/firing the thing; for the weapon to really be balanced. That means, number 1, that the cost of firing is relative to the target, meaning that the cost comes after the destruc

Except when you use super weapons to fix the broken game element it means the game always climaxes with an exchange of super weapons or people making desperate raids on a super weapon to stop it. it's predictable and boring. if you base the game on tactics and a series of UNIT based weapons systems instead of big ol nukes or whatever then it's more interesting. especially if the units are not themselves super unkillable death machines. Because again there's no real tactics to using

It's honestly how deleting programs should work though. I'm tired of programs scattering everything all over the computer. Stay in your damn install directory. Part of the reason why I have to reinstall windows every year or so is because of programs doing that. Ideally, I'd like them to leave the registry alone almost entirely. Fine put an entry in there for the uninstall app, but otherwise stay in your damn directory. If there is config information that you want

Superweapons are good but games that don't need them are even better. Most games that have super weapons use them as a means to fix a broken element of the game play. Typically defensive structures can't be countered effectively by attacking units... or something of that nature... games that don't need super weapons are those where precise control of your units allows you to take advantage of the one thing defensive structures can't do... maneuver. I can move my force

I hate cheating AIs... CnC and the blizzard AIs cheat at higher settings. Mostly because they get lots of extra resources but also they tend to have complete knowledge of the map. That total map awareness is common in FPS games as well for AIs. The easiest way to tell is to hide somewhere and see if they come right for you without searching the rest of the map first. Most of the AIs at ANY setting have total map awareness in the unreal games. D

schem, who do you think you're fooling here? Not only is this my opinion but it's the majority opinion of those that have suffered through the last few discussions with you. Boasting and blustering are an ok smoke screen but when all is said and done that's all it is... You're a smart guy and I hope to have a meaningful discussion with you in the future. But you make mistakes. That's ok... you're human. You also don't know everything. You've been getting in trouble lately

well, pirates should be able to "raid" a planet in that they pretend to be merchants or traders... land or dock... do some bit of crime... and then escape before anyone find them. But pirates are NOT vikings. Vikings could and DID raid whole towns. But they were more then pirates they were a whole barbarian society. Pirates are not. Pirates are a lose collection of criminals. They can become wealthy but their wealth will probably never rival that of even the smallest countries. The

as has been said, he's currently too mad to think straight... give him a few days and he'll calm down. Until then he's prone to make insane declarations. I take pleasure in knowing I've quashed you so severly you cannot come up with a counter. quite the opposite in fact... you've acted in such a deranged and irrational manner of late that its pointless to try and reason with you. I have however noted a

you're right, the term "cruiser" is more complicated... but the term cruiser is always an abbreviation. what you are referring to is a coast cruiser or shore cruiser. In any event, I've heard many people on this site and elsewhere refer to Battlecruisers as being powerful ships... when really, they're not. Their guns ARE powerful... but as a battleplateform they're so vulnerable to enemy fire that they're of limited use when compared to a battleship. This is one of t

Alliance is different than imperialism you are correct. I have no problem with the US allying with, South Korea for instance. Imperialism is a totally different thing and yes it does happen today. Iraq is the best example, though one could make a case for Afghanistan as an instance of modern imperialism as well. Imperialism is rarer in the modern world and in the instances where it exists, it tends to be more subtle. For instance, read the book Co

technically a cruiser is a ship with battleship weapons but almost no armor at all. They're cheap and primarily useful either in supporting roles or against enemies with sucky weapons. For example, if you wanted to go attack pirates or something cruisers would bring the full weaponry of a battleship down on them without the extra expense of the armor or fuel required to move such a heavy ship to that position. Which is fine because pirate typically don't weapons worth a damn. They're also useful

stealthed pirate bases might be interesting... perhaps only discoverable by the spy ship that we should have. Edit: pirates are not supposed to be able to go toe to toe with government forces. They never were able to do that and shouldn't. It's a silly concept. Pirates survive by hiding, lying, and sneaking around. The best pirate ships are ones that look like something else. For example, a pirate ship that looked like one of your trade ships... only the side
