Mages with high initiative can decimate huge numbers of troops. Generally I try to have two hero armies supported by whatever they need. Generally I only have one mage in LH because when you start fireballing your way across the map there isn't really enough mana to share in the mid game. If I get a commander I make him/her an Archer commander. You should see what some companies of horse based archers can do to the enemy when trained in a great fortress and supported by a

Hmm, if you start with life magic, and you should (heal is just too powerful to forego at the start), then with Kingdom, at least as Pariden you start with +1 mat spell, +2 Growth Spell, and +1 research per essence spells. So, you can see, three extremely useful spells right as you start the game. So, 2-3 essences is huge. I don't know if Pariden gets a special spell there or its all life magic, but that grouping of spells, none of which cost much to cast destroys any other tile.

Well, after my earlier statement I just am playing a game where Altair was destroyed by monsters on around turn 8 or 9. I ctrl-u to see what was going on and I couldn't see Relias anywhere, and just his hero's army sitting two tiles outside the city while a darkling troops closed on the city.

Umm, that's not true at all, do you have a 64 bit OS? Are you using the right installer? I have direct x 9c on both my vista and 7 64 installations.

Ya, I have disabled Spell of Making and Uber Quest, though, to be fair, if you can complete Uber Quest you can roll over the AI, so I may re-enable that one. The more I think about it though, I think these victory conditions are for you. Don't want to go through the slog fest of taking out all the AI's? Cast the Spell of Making. Feels cheap though. The biggest failing of large 4x games is the ending, generally you know whether you have won the game at the half way mark, if not

The only game I've ever played where it was obvious that the AI suffered from monster attacks was Alpha Centauri. It's kind of funny when you get a death notice 8 turns into the game. I consider "abundant wildlife" to be a balancing factor to higher AI settings. I think in Civ 4 the AI also suffered from barb attacks, but I don't remember any civ actually dying from them. I haven't noticed, say a bunch of assassin demons wiping out any of my allies cities in FE yet, or

Well, limit yourself. Unless you are playing multiplayer, it's you, using Archers. There are things that could be improved. Probably more than any other game genre, 4x games suffer from an ability for the gamers to see where improvements should or could be. This is a game all laid out on a table for you, not in discreet chunks like an FPS or RPG. So, be a little patient, constructive feedback is great. The Stardock team seem to be working really hard on this game, and I am

Sometimes I replay a tactical battle 3 or 4 times just to see if I can think of a way to win, only to autoresolve and win a crushing victory. I don't really get the magic there. Automoving 2 melee heroes and a unit of monks to a city to heal up, I didn't watch where they were going and they were attacked by a dark wizard. They always cast despair on turn one or two when I fight them unless countered (sometimes the spell autofires, it's busted), so I just autoresolved think

Just have an appearance tab, so we can keep them looking like we designed them.

Well, it's not like Pioneers take a long time to make, depending on the time it takes you to make 50 mana points you might be looking at a 3 turn investment there anyway. So all you are missing is the travel time.

The game seems to load a tier 1 monster right around your starter cities and in a circle outwards increases the difficulty. You will see this is the AI hasn't cleared around their starter city. After wading through tons of difficult mobs to get there, you will see wolves and darklings again. So, you should start out okay if you are careful. Those mobs will generally not attack your city and if they do they will die against a rank 2 city. Having said all of that, you may need to bu

Course it takes about 2 fights to take a level 5 one to level 7, so wasting a trait on + levels seems a little silly to me at this point. I will say, starting with summoner, it's decent trait to get you through your first few fights before you can get your damage up.

Depends on the role, defender or warrior is terrific for melee. For a mage, assassin or mage, for archers go assassin and for the useless heroes you make them governors.

Every now and then my heroes all end up in the same area except for maybe a lucky one or two with 5 or 6 moves who explore the map, and they all pile on for quest turn-ins; then disperse back to their regular tasks.

It is definitely in gal civ 2, and it's a really great function for managing significant empire.

In War of Magic, at least in the original incarnation (which was technically glitchy but I loved), monsters spawned in the fog of war. I walled off huge areas of the map and farmed them with my heroes. In FE like Tuidjy, I have not seen any spawn in a fog of war in the absence of camps. I don't know if the spawn rate at camps differs based on whether it is in the fog of war though, I may, if I am ever really bored, test that. I keep spawn camps of monsters that I get a lot of exp

Knowledge is either rare are uncommon, and they definitely stack. I don't know if Pot 1, 2 & 3 stack because the descriptions in the game are...well, total crap and there is no place to see your exp bonus. But, I tested it and knowledge definitely stacks with potential. There is no Knowledge 2, so it's a nice one time boost. If you get it anywhere close to the beginning of the game Pot 1 and Knowledge along with say, the Practice Sword (9 attack +10% exp), can get you ticking up l

Except at higher levels you, and it's labelled as rare, get a chance at a second path. So far I have never had assassin offered to my mages, but I've now had Defender, Governor and Warrior, so it's only a matter of time.
Quoting Heavenfall, reply 11They're crucial to me as you'll face enemies with 40-50 spell resist at the end of the game. Yeah, you can't waste 5 turns trying to cast blindness or shrink on a dragon with a 20% to get the spell through.
By then you should have a defender with 100% fire resist and big dodge, defence and HP.

Autoresolve also seems to use attack and defense values differently. I attacked a band of wolves with my 9 attack 3 defense hero very early in the game, 3 packs of wolves and a great wolf. I played this tactical battle, I don't know, 5 times? I couldn't win, the wolves all had really high init and took me down to almost dead before I got a chance to move, as a melee champ, no magic to save me. I autoresolved the battle and lost 2 hp. That was simply an impossibility in tactical unless

Path of Assassins is very effective for magic damage, it's also of great benefit for melee troops, even if kind of glass cannony. It is, overall, the most useful of all the abilities outside of a specific focus or build.
