The fact that all traits, abilities, and attributes of which you speak could easily be recreated in humanity alone in a fantasy game utilizing a variety of explanations is my only point in this discussion. Your arguments to me seem largely explanation based in that you like one explanation better than another which there is nothing wrong with but one dimensional.
You could say a specif

I agree and think it's a great idea... I haven't suggested this since it's probably a big project to provide such a realistic fantasy world, probably larger than any current suggestions. I would love to see many different levels for the Elemental realm as you've suggested. A section of caves could exist inside a mountain range allowing one player to choose sending his attacking army thru the caves, hiking across the mountains or using magic and/or flyi

The best way to identify micro_management problems is from testing a very large map with several human players. By mid_game if players are spending significantly more time managing one feature which has no fun value then some type of adjustment for the feature would be best.
I reinstalled AoW:SM with the 1.4 patch to test this, and that mechanic is not to allow the underdog have a better chance of fighting. One of your examples was the underdog sending air units to attack the approaching armies to cast spells on them and that doesn't work because the defender gets to act first, so your flier is going to get barbacued before it can act. And even if it survives and you can cast a spell, for example the best of

They are fantasy, they are terribly successful and they have only humans (well, there's some minor magic and strange things here and there, but the leaders and main characters are all human).
I personally don’t understand the logic behind the whole “if all the factions are human they aren’t as diverse as classic fantasy races.” I do understand the frequently used example of a wraith or ghost passing through a wall which is impossible for a “normal” human but this is really just a context argument it lacks true weight especially in a world with magic. The weather suggestion has been on the forums for awhile. Ideally types of weather should be something which can be seen approaching such as storm clouds, tornadoes, etc., . Overall dragons are extremely powerful and if Stardock is referencing Dungeon&Dragons than they might be magical and intelligent as well. Although possible dragon attacks should be very rare in my opinion.

I feel the weather idea would really help the Elemental realm to feel more real and would add new strategic options. To see a rain storm moving over a battlefield thus any archers with regular bows or fire mages suffer.
Caravans hold a unique opportunity for elemental depending on the level of interaction they can have on the game world. I would suspect that like GalCiv2 you will have a number of statistics for cities/villages. So the urgency of a particular caravan would largely be dependent on a city's past and the current situation. Caravans also open up the possibility of devious actions if you can interact with them directly.
</p
