I also like the idea of a slider. But if that is too hard, why not simply keep the checkbox and let the user decide on the fly?

I really cannot believe Element is or can or should go gold in a month. Realizing I'm in the vast minority, I'd much rather have it in Q1 2011. I've invested a lot of time and effort here, and most of it has been hard work and, as I have been greatly and correctly forewarned by Brad himself, not fun. (I do not mean interacting with you and giving feedback; that is "fun". But not the actual testing so far.) I cannot see this being a product I want to identify with in 1 month. I'd much rather t
I cannot see this game going gold in August. We havent tested tactical battles and magic, really. I think it's crazy, I'd go with 2011.
Did Brad mean by "no flying" that there will be no spells which enable it? That's a huge surprise. Or did he mean that no "human" units will be able to fly out of the box? That seems reasonable.
Hey this sounds and looks wonderful! As a technical idiot and computer illiterate, I did not understand much of the subsequent conversation, although I tried to follow it closely. Can anyone explain to me what "32 bit" and "64 bit" *versions* of the game (which may or may not be released later) actually mean? How would that change anything, and what do I need to understand? If I am running Windows 7 on my laptop (my only computer), does that mean I have a "64 bit" machine, and that I
I belong to the small minority of beta testers who are functional computer illiterates; looking at that screenshot makes me nervous, and the idea of having to alter it scares me. I really wish I did not have to mod if there were a possibility of having as many "tweaks" to the various aspects of the game be done on various drag-down menus from "game options / setup" screens. Would making those (a slew of setup screens) cost a lot of time and resources?
I think Brad was trying to signal that he is aware that there is hardly a danger as great to any TBS than a No-Brainer, both in terms of late-game tedium and general fun . I think he will be trying to minimize No-Brainers and maximize meaningful polyvalent choices.
Wow, lots of good posts here. Brad, are you actually going to read all of this?!? [e digicons]O:)[/e] I'll try to keep it short My 2 Eurocents: AoE vs. Combat Speed : Disagree with Brad, agree with most others: Sauron should have had an AoE and low combat speed. 10 COMBAT PHASES, COMBINED ARMS, and COMBAT SPEED : I could imagine a way
By this I don't mean, my pointy stick is bigger than your pointy stick and does more damage. I mean this unit has X equipment which makes it act radically different from your man with the bigger pointy stick.
I agree with most things you posted, and particularly agree with this quote here, since it captures the essence of what I mean: NOT (only) bigger and better as options, BUT rather different, for example, in te
Great post, I didn't find it too long. - Yey for turn-based tactical battles! - Question 1: It is not clear from your post which camp you, Brad, feel now has some (any, the most) stance in Elemental. Were you trying to say that all camps, or no camps, or all but the Settler's camp, are currently where things are heading? - Question 2: I think the two biggest questions you put at the end of your post are interesting, but not nearly foremost in my mind (partly becau
It also means that Beta 2 (rather than 3) should start being (I dare say) fun-ish.
I realize I am in the vast minority, but I fail to see why everyone continues the uproarious hilarity. I think that at least this part of Brad's post I am quoting goes against everything the Stardock team has been attempting to uphold so far. Brad has, quite correctly, up until a few days ago held fast (with some minor self-contradictions) to the claim that it
Just one minor example. With the beta, it would never ever have occurred to us to have a global resource system. Every city having its own resource pool has always been how it's done.
Doesn't most of the Civilization series have, with the exception of Food, a global resource pool (e.g. luxuries such as spices etc., materials such as aluminum etc.)?
I am intruiged by what you have shown of EotFS. I read the Wiki entry, which failed to say whether the game was for MP or SP, but the Gamespot review from 1997 seems to indicate that it is SP. Is that review accurate? In other words: Does it suffer from the same abysmal AI that Dom3 and Star Chamber suffer from? Wher
I have never seen a fantasy film I particularly liked, with the possible exception of Excalibur. I found Peter Jackson's LotR films to be the biggest dissapointment of the respective years of release. I'd suggest reading books.
That sounds awesome. Have never heard of Fading Suns before. Sadly, I know nothing about programming .... but I know about games, so I can help test when you get things up and running, or juist in general if you need any input. Will it be multiplayer only, like Dom3 is more or less (the AI is gruesome)? Will you have AI?
Since I do not see any developments in this direction, just wondering what most people think: I do not like modding, I am also computer illiterate -- I would really like something like this in the "vanilla" version because most of the technologies I am envisioning here are themselves complex; but even if not, how "easy" or "hard" would this be to mod?
I would much rather have Elemental in Q1 2011 than a game I find suboptimal. I'm in no rush, even though I am, of course, NOT having fun.
Sorry, I have noticed this feature on other forums, which I like: Being able to designate my time zone and have times of posts displayed in my time zone (Continental Europe GMT +1). Would this be terribly bothersome to implement in /my account/options?
I use IE8 and I when I click "save changes", the box remains unchecked. In any case, I cannot notice a difference in forum appearance.
I do not entirely understand why so many people are worried about the Advisors being "annoying" or detrimental. The only "negative" aspect to the Advisors I can see is that it would give the human player too an "unfair" advantage. I imagine the advisors being like the f5 tab in the Civilization series -- after a while, an experienced player simply does not look at it anymore, but it is very helpful for a new player. That being said, I have rarely seen a tutorial I did not find helpful
Example? Tell me just 1 TBS game, which has more depth than Dominions 3. for example. [Even tho, basically there is no economy in Dominions 3., but it's a wargame.]
In my previous post, I gave at least two examples, perhaps you could take a look at them. Additionally, the point of my post was to differentiate between complexity and depth. I believe I gave examples for all of these. Here is one really
I would also like to see global resources as a function with which we can interact, particularly so that there is some element of choice through risk: do I allocate defense resources to guard my food resources, do I stockpile and risk losing in the future what i have now? Etc.
I see a lot of talk about Dwarf Fortress in connection with depth and complexity here. Maybe I am misunderstanding something, since I am in the minority and have not been able to play too much DF (dislike roguelike), but it appears to me that DF is the opposite of what I mean: It has depth, but at the price of complexity. I think Dominions 3 falls into this category too. Imagine there would be a graph whose X axis was complexity - simplicity, and whose Y axis was superficiality - dept
I like these replies and the way the discussion is revolving. To oversimplify: It seems clear that "paper scissors rock" is a poor choice (and one I did not intend to convey), but that some form of inherent possibility for variety is needed -- perhaps one which only becomes functionally manifest if certain conditions are met, e.g. Units U1 through U15 receive a bonus to defense if Tech T5 is unlocked *and* has a shield equipped, Units U7 and U8 receive a
