i like that ad. if i still read print mags, i'd probably stop to read it. i don't usually stop for full page ads, but when something looks like a schematic or map, my eyes are drawn to it. i think a lot of the game's strengths are lost, though. for example, i barely noticed the "ship designer: YOU" thing at the bottom. I agree with Jestak's point that i'd have no way of knowing those are in-game graphics. maybe it's just about scaling.

i have a 24" wide too, and yes it's way sweet. i haven't tried it in portrait mode yet for galciv. hmmm....
but it's not their relatioship with you (if they build bases in your territory, they're not going to hate you more because of it... i hope). i do agree that there needs to be an option to threaten players as well as negotiate with them to encourage them to take certain actions, such as removing a specific star base. the AI can send me random unilateral messages (i also get those when i have a strong military build up near their space), and i react to t
i don't know if anyone else did, but i suggested that before the 1.1 betas came out. now i'm playing the betas, and i don't think it's a smart move. think about it this way. 1 industrial sector might take 400 turns or cost about 8k to buy. a basic factory, factory, enhanced factor, manufacturing center, and industrial sector, built in order on the same tile, might take less time because each subsequent structure is being built with the bonus from the p
hey frogboy, does "rectoactively" mean "through an active rectum"?
i noticed the newest patch also seems to slow down my computer more than the older versions, but it's much more stable (only crashed twice all day yesterday, PQ-0 planets aren't all mercuries when i reloan, and other small bugs seem gone (like the picture for discovery spheres has changed). also i usually leave winamp running too. on that note, since galciv's interface is based on windows blinds, i wonder how much work it would take to come up with a m
*impact* on economy.... *how* the AI bases its decision.... sorry guys, i know i need to proof read more, but it's Sat. morning here.
the idea of voting in two stages on certain laws seems good. so for some laws, like minimum constructor speed, first vote on whether to change it, and then vote on how much. regarding the second vote, i'm not sure if it's better that the result is the median (value closest to average) vs. the mode (most commonly voted value). i'd say the median would be more in line with the idea of a UP. to me it just seems like the UP didn't have enough wo
(by that i meant that at least you'd get to see your ships fire off a couple shots before they blow up).
you can beat those weapons in a couple ways. attack first. yes, this seems obvious enough to be insulting. but that's the purpose of having ships with faster movement and better sensors. you could also use extra defenses, and not bother with the ones you don't need. so if they were using the black hole eruptor (missiles), the only thing you should be putting on your ship is the areon missile defense. but yes, i know how
happens to me too.
sheesh. i rarely use 'their' when i should use 'they're'
honestly.... i rarely play a game unless my home planet has a 300 or 700 % mineral bonus. it's slightly chees, yes. and if there's ever multiplayer it's not something you can count on. honestly i'm surprised home planet tile bonuses aren't programmed into each race's... uh... file. i don't know what the techno jargon term would be for what i'm trying to say. anyway, i usually turn my industry up to 100% on the first turn, military 60, social
IMO the game definately needs high-yield bombardment weapons (aka 'bombs') to enable players to damage infrastructure and kill taxpayers without needing to invade (say, as part of a retreat). never tried this but thought about it. why not put 1 troop in a transport then use one of the messier invasio
there is absolutely no reason to use different terms when the same term is meant sure there is, it builds confusion. i mean, if we use the real ones as examples, political leaders are supposed to be confused about what's going on....
i played a game where i had 1 morale bldg per farm, but some of my planets still had much lower approval than others. when i added an extra morale, the approval typically only went up by 2%. the manual seems kind of outdated on this issue - all it says about approval and population in the "bread and circuses" section is: -default approval is 100% -higher population lowers approval -higher taxes lowers approval -having a negative bal
beta seems to have been working okay until some specific point in this last game i was playing. all of a sudden, when i try to build a new economy base near my homeworld, the game crashes to my desktop. also crashes when i try to go to the next turn now. (blast! i was just getting into that game too). Debug Message: Version v1.1 BETA-2A last updated on: Thu Mar 30 21:37:53 2006 Debug Message: Could not find a TGN Serial No. Debu
panning with a left click on the ship design!?! you f***ing reach my mind. and rotating pieces too. only other thing i'd request is separate x/y/z resizing. and since you're all ready messing with the minor races, why not just make a slider for them? maybe not a stright number, but a % of unpopulated planets that will have minor civs, and the likelyhood new ones will show up. just a thought, since you're all ready working on the feature (i know it woul
i keep it at the highest zoom before they turn to icons. but i'm playing at 1920 x 1200, so that still fits quite a bit of space (almost an entire tiny map, actually). the amount of time i put into ships it totally an ego thing. if i just need them to convince the drengin i'm strong enough to fend them off, it's all about basic. before a massive invasion, i'll put a lot of work into a few designs. sometimes. i usually plan humans, so i've started a st
no, that resoultion restricts the min, not the max. i never noticed that bug, though i don't recommend adding 3 parsecs to all constructors just because of the resolution. the UP law is supposed to make building slow constructors illegal, if you actually read it. there is a similar one for frieghters. i don't remember seeing this bug though
something similar happened to my economy after i took over a minor race. it spiked for 1 turn, and that turn i made about 25K in profit, but the next turn it dropped to its previous level. it made trying to track my economy for the rest of the game impossible, because that one turn made the rest of my economic history so small that it just looked like a line on the bottom of the graph. this must have something to do with taking over a minor
and i could have spelled etymology correctly, too.
if you really wanted to prove yourself a jerk, you could have included the differing etymologgies, "mine" coming from a celtic word for ore, menor being latin for small or inferior. anyway, i only jumped on this post because i thought it'd be cool if there was a slider for minor races. the new patch made them less of an "all over the map" thing.... i liked that in games sometimes. it made the universe seem less empty, and I also like them be
okay.. i was also wrong about the impulse engines. but you get it.
