I had the same problem and found it was caused by ATI tray tools. Apparently tray tools does not play well with CCC for some games. Most likely this will be resolved in the final release but for now all you have to do is disable tray tools and you will be fine. I actually disabled tray tools from starting with windows, but you probably can just exit the program before starting the game.

Malleus, Have you disable advanced lighting and anti-aliasing in video options? I know advanced lighting will cause the hero and map problem and have heard anti-aliasing can cause problems.
Same here and was unable to find anything in the patch notes either about being disabled.
You actually can manually modify the nVidia (active amor) firewall. There should be a shortcut icon on your desktop called "NVIDIA Firewall". Double click that and go to Firewall --> Advanced Configuration --> Application. They should see Elemental listed here. If it's not there, go to Active Armor --> Application and click the button called "Add Rule". You should now be in the menu called <
You shouldn't have to disable the firewall. Just add an exception for elemental.exe. I added an exception for ELLaunch.exe as well to be safe.
MikeL1977, If it is freezing at the splash screen that seems to point to a firewall issue. Does your firewall have a "training mode"? If so, switch to training mode the first time you run the game. If not add an exception manually for the .exe. Unless you happen to use Comodo in which case you need to add an exception in the "Defense+" security screen as well. Mine was doing the same thing but adding an exception fixed the issue.
Keenelarp, I had the same problem as you do, which was caused by an external application. Are you using ATI tray tools? If so you will need to disable it, or just exiting it might work. I did this and it runs fine now. There appears to be some form on conflict between CCC and ATI tray tools which is causing the graphics engine to error out when trying to initialize. <span style="
