I notice the puny-starbase problem alot, but a good percentage of the planets I take over have a fairly good buildout on them. There are exceptions however. Frequently they waste food bonuses permanently by putting galactic achevements or trade goods on them. Sometimes they also waste morale bonus tiles. They are usually pretty good about using manufacturing and research tiles though. I usually do a little bit of tweaking on the planets after I get the

You know how you mentioned alternate ways of displaying the sliders? I love how you can split your tax rate and production rate, but it would be nice to have a seperate slider for Research spending and Industrial spending rather than lumping them together. The social vs. military sliders then could be left, or shifted to the planet screen. I'm not picky. Even th

In one of the campaign games, I built a chain of military bases chained down to one of their planets so I would have the range to get at them. They spent something like 3 ships trying to take out the furthest one before I got one of my ships down there to blast the remaining fighters. This was only 1/1/1 attack on the starbase though. It took it months to get back to full HP... Influence starbases are indispensible though. Note:

My first targets are always some mid-range weapon tech, and to charge down the sensor tree first and get Eyes of the Universe built. Once you get that actually putting sensors on your ship becomes redundant. Having high speed ships with Eyes of the Universe is incredibly empowering, especially against the Dreadlords. After that I do a good bit of spreading out, Engines and weapon techs over defensive techs. I'll start putting defensive techs

I was playing this with "normal" level Arceans and was wondering how they managed to get their cultural influence so strong. Two fully loaded influence star bases just inside their border barely made a dent in it. I'm now in the final stages of that game and just flipped an Arcean planet. Link A 700% manufacturing bonus, and a 300% manufacturing bonus, then he l

I find myself building more small ships than anything else. I have Medium ships right now but I only have one Medium class, the Tornado MkI. I haven't upgraded it because the Blowfish MkIII and Wallfish MkIII have been doing everything I want so far. (Blowfish = high speed 0/8/0, Wallfish = no engine 0/12/0 for defense.) I suppose I should go design a Tornado MkII, but the thing is so ugly I've just been waiting for the Spearman class frigat

When I had this happen against the Dark Yor, it also increased my influence so the entire map was blue. Almost every planet on the map was showing as rebellious. As it turns out, only 1 planet swapped to me before the influence dropped back to normal.

Part of it could be range. Maybe the ships + the alien's range was not sufficient to let it even operate where it was, so it just left it sit there or moved it to somewhere that was within its range? I started to make hyper-high range fighters for this purpose...

The starbases by themselves only give you a tiny amount of extra influence. If you keep building onto them with extra constructors they can be quite formidable. My current game has 5 influence starbases at around +380% for their areas. They're literally holding the borders of my empire out for me, especially the 2 that are inside what used to be Arcean territory. The other 3 were put there to keep arcean, torian, and iconian influence from rolling over

I had problems with it in FF. I ended up setting my default character in IE to get the forum icons to work. It appears that as of that brief restart of the forum earlier, all the icons disappeared again though. Resetting my default doesn't help.

This is why I always finish my games before grabbing the latest update. Gotta show those blasted Arceans that the galaxy's culture belongs to me, and put those influence hogs back in their place... Heh. *quietly puts a +380 influence starbase next to an Iconian world that was in danger of cultureflipping over to the Arceans.* <img src="ht

Perhaps rather than ceasing spending on social production, you could implement a system similar to the "focusing" that is already in the game. It would be "Automatic Defocusing" of social production. Any cash being spent on it would automatically go to Military if there's a ship being built, up to the production limit there, then would go to Research, up to the research limit there. I wonder if you could put the rest of that into maintenance on the bui

I was having a problem with the Drath scattering tiny influence starbases in my influence area. They were at war with the minor race "Dark Yor" so I handed over 3 Scimitar Medium Fighters to them. They did the same thing. just left them sitting there. Very disappointing. Whenever I click on them though, they show up as 0/6 on movement. It's like they don't regain their movement points each round? VERY odd.

Especially if they start pushing copy protection into the realm of "Used Game Sales Prevention." Sony had a patent for that back in the late 90's. It basically disables all of your games if your console dies and needs to be replaced, for example.

I like rushing out to get colonies at the start. It's fun to gamble at how close your enemies are by pushing that colony ship out just a little further, maybe there's a lvl 12 instead of this 8 you just approached? etc. The first game had alot of little logistics challenges to the colony rush. You had more limited range so you would have to chain your ships out so that you colonized the back planets just as your front ships hit their frontier on r
