This happened to me once before too. I can't remember if it was the same Arnando or somebody else.
It's always like that. The defenders are only there to make it a bit harder to kill them. It basically keeps them alive long enough to give you get a chance to recruit them.
So the allies don't come with the hero? Is the same true for all those other heroes that have demons and fire elementals with them?
I've seen this, and quite frankly I would rather have the defenders be part of the deal. Raise the reqruitment price if necessary, but I want that little army!!!!
Working as intended. It might be nice if they bumped the cost of champions to let us pick up their guards, but that might make them prohibitively expensive.
They should state this clearly when hiring heroes anyways, it gets quite confusing for new players since they will have no idea what is happening, thats probably why this is the 7th time or so we see this kind of post

Yes, this is clearly a case of an unintended consequence turning into a great feature. It's a great way to make the champions unique.
