I gained access to forest drakes (the sprite for their lairs is missing, by the way) and when I went to edit other units, I saw Forest Drake on the list. I was able to give it equipment including a mount, but trying to give it new traits caused the game to crash - probably because it had three already.
I haven't tested extensively so I don't know if other creatures have the same issue.
