If I want to role-play I can rename my faceless peasants - and that's free. Beats the heck out of recruiting a Champion for 100 gilder that I could have spent on a squad of longbowmen.

Something that just occurred to me about Champions as I was playing just now - what's the point of them having a Charisma rating? If Charisma is only good for making champions less expensive to hire, isn't it pointless for any character other than a Sovereign having Charisma?
I was thinking along those lines too, Glavius. I actually went back in to the game just now and saw a bunch more Kraxis pioneers in unclaimed territory near their cities. No path-finding issue there, so who knows? The area they were in was full of those barren scrub tiles that you can't build on, so maybe the AI doesn't realize that there's some tiles it can't settle pioneers on.
Playing as the Paridens with a fresh start 1.6 game, I was exploring around Kraxis territory when I saw some of their units appear around my borders (we still need some sort of popup alert when enemy units are spotted near our borders, by the way). Upon examination, the units weren't soldiers - they were pioneers. Completely undefended, hanging out near my territory. Mind you, this was after the Kraxis had declared war on me. I didn't attack them to see what would happen. Nothing happ
This is a truly great post. While I think it's all worthwhile, I particularly agree with your suggestions for improving tactical combat.
Besides, to add to Archon's statement, shouldn't defensive units -be- hard to hit? That's kind of their hat, after all. You need a offensive powerhouse to overcome them and probably other tactics to go with. As for such creatures early in the game... avoid them. You're not going to be able to tame the wilderness in one fell sweep. Some things you will simply need to avoid until you're more powerful. And this is where level 1 cities can
I don't think the high defence is a problem. You can get ridiculously high attack values in the late game, and of course you also have various spells and abilities which ignore defence altogether (came in incredibly handy for that headless hermit on the master quest).
But then what do you do for 90% of the game until you unlock that stuff? The battle I was describing was less than 100 turns into the game. If every ma
I had a consistently re-occuring CTD this evening that would occur every time I finished a particular battle in defence of one of my cities in sandbox mode. While the CTD was a bummer, that's not what this post is about: this post is about an observation I made while fighting that same battle three times: high-defence units are damn near impossible to hit in tactical battles. My opponent had a 64-defence champion in his army, and I had a 50-defence monster in mine. This battle
I had a hero (my sovereign's spouse no less) disappear after defeating a wolf in the wilderness. She was accompanied by troops (who didn't disappear) and I was swimming in money.
Good stuff, thanks Stardock. Has anyone else noticed that sometimes your cities will have the name of the last NPC city you were looking at? Hopefully that's fixed in this new patch.
