Now, after another small patch was downloaded, the 'esc' key will no longer get me past the error message. Nice. Guess I am reverting to the released version.

@ Vallu751 Thanks, 'esc' did indeed work. @ Fistalis Thanks to you also. I didn't think about the beta version acting that differently. Is the internet connection allowing Stardock to keep track of beta performance? Just curious. Since "esc' works, I will see if beta helps with the crash issues, the I'll decide between reverting to the released version or messing with my firewall.
I am getting the following message when trying to start the game from the Stardock interface: "Failed to download the data file. Please make sure that you are connected to the internet, have signed into Impulse, and that no firewall or anti-virus program is blocking Elemental."
