Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the battleship Dauntless Shipyard director Prescott Calaway speaks to the employees and audience, as he presents the new vessel to Admiral Talwyn. "Ladies and gentlemen, this fine vessel is a testament to your excellent work," he drones on with expansive political smiles. In the audience, an aggrevated Suzan Shelling is muttering to her secretary, while he tries to console her. "It's just ridiculous, cutting our research skiff funding-

TO: Jeremy Willows, Blockade Commander FROM: Chief Science Officer Brady O'Connel, Survey Vessel Asheron RE: Science Report Brief Jeremy, After three weeks of intensive orbital scans and sub-surface probes, we have determined that planet Perdu-IV should be reclassified as uninhabitable. Substantial chemical changes have taken place in nearly all the tectonic plate junctures, so recently that our instruments cannot measure how recent—less than one hundred years best gu

Subspace transmission TO: Admiral Talwyn, 3rd fleet FROM: QEO Jeremy Willows, Perdu-IV blockade commander Sir, At 07:15 this morning, ops received a message from Perdu University, which was thought to be uninhabitable. IDScan identified the caller as Professor Kent Washburn, and as the attached video log demonstrates, he appears to be in the second stage of infection, characterized by pasty complexion, profuse sweating, fearful speech patterns, and dementia.

PERDU-IV UNDER QUARANTINE! In charge of the blockade is Quarantine Enforcement Officer Jeremy Willows, who stated "A new strain of debilitating airborne viral disease has caused several fatalities around the globe. Until we develop a vaccine, there will be no transport to or from Perdu-IV." When asked about the speculation that it was an act of terrorism using a bio-weapon distributed from high orbit, Willows replied that he had not seen any conclusive evidence to substantiate such wi

News report from Dust World After losing contact with the research skiff Thalmaturge that used to float in the atmosphere of Dust World, a Search & Rescue investigation team was sent to determine the cause. Much of the vessel sank below radar scanning depths, but some debris was recovered, which seems to indicate unusual activity. The hull fragments bear serpentine scratch marks, and appears to have been squeezed until it burst. When asked if this could be interpreted

Dust world - 100s of feet of swirling dust comprise the lower layers of atmosphere. There is an undulating layer of more or less compacted dust which barely defines a surface capable of supporting Earth objects. The atmospheric pressure is mostly shifting dust, and at many times earth's pressure, it requires deep-sea type operations to 'land'. Occasional rocky outcroppings/mountains jut up from the depths of the planet, forming rare firmament in the wilderness. No lig

Yeppers, this is hypothetical meanderings along the same lines as black holes, gravity waves, and other unmeasured stuff, supported by the weakest of all data: anecdotal evidence. Definitely not scientific research! So in that vein, something I found from playing Grand Theft Auto -- The amount of violent criminal behavior that I was performing in the game eventually made me ill! (yeah so i'm a wuss. whatever.) I didn't want to go back to another several hours of yanking people out of th

Civilization-3 handled budget sliders on an empire-wide scale, with a simple percentage of income going to research, another going to morale, and any leftover percentage that you didn't assign going to the treasury. You could also go into individual cities (planets in our case) and assign people to different jobs--tax collector raising money, scientist increasing research, entertainer boosting morale. The combination works quite nicely. A counterpoint about moving all finances around: W

Half-Life 2 & Steam: Written BY greedy people FOR greedy people I've pretty much gotten sick of the dungeon crawl. Wander through unknown corridor, kill everything, solve a puzzle. repeat. eck. The sharp increase from 1985 to 1993 coincides with the start of the tv game industry. Counterpoint that with the period of declining homocides by age from 1994 to the present. There are other interesting coincidences to consider. For instance, in 1973 Norma McCorvey, later renamed Jane Roe, won a controversial Wade vs Roe Supreme Court ruling t

Lucky Jack brings up a good point: What happens when an unarmed ship with an armed escourt gets attacked? If the escourt is destroyed, then does the unarmed ship automatically die? Could the escourt be considered buying time for the unarmed ship to escape? Could the attacker want some other outcome besides just destroy everything?

I just thought that it would be unlikely that official contact with alien governments would say 'give us a big virtual hug'. It seems unlikely for a Vulcan ambassador, or a race of intelligent machines. But more exotic races might be very emotional. The GasBags of Jupiter might be an open species, the Krabs of Pluto might

then there maybe would not be "the problem of single way to victory" The technical term for this is Pure Strategy , where one strategy is the winner. The alternative to a pure strategy is what is called a Mixed Strategy where several tactics might win, but are not guaranteed to do so against all comers, so that the best choice is a

The decisions in the Ground Combat part of the game are asset-related: If you have the money, you can buy better attacks. I liked the idea of selecting the least expensive mode of attack that could win me a given battle, but unfortunately it was difficult to judge how much spread the random numbers injected into the scenario. The probability of victory/defeat did not clearly appear in GC1. If there is to be some rework in the planetary combat pop-up screen, then I want a better sense of

A thought on ship designs and obsoleting them: If players spend a bunch of time designing a ship class, then maybe the ship classes could be treated as a form of save-able document. Then obsoleting would be simply moving the design file to the \obsolete subdirectory. As an added bonus, players could swap, upload, post on their website, and otherwise show off their favorite ship designs.

But i will say that on older intel video chipsets the game won't work nor will it ever work on those. Out of a perverse sense of experimentation, I tried running GalCiv2 on an ancient toshiba laptop (pentium mmx 233mhz, S3-Virge video, Win98SE/DirectX9.0c). A very nice mod to Space Empires-IV called DarkNova-4 takes this concept in an excellent direction. The basic idea is one called "Mounts", which modifes the various ship componants: * Premium Quality part; expensive but sleightly superior * Low Quality part; half-price but sleightly bigger and prone to breakdowns and supply usage. * Mini - expensive method of squeezing more of a part into a hull With many mount variants, an almost continuous range is

It might be possible to get some of the spirit of multiple fighter roles with hull sizes, hit points and damage. A fighter that deals 1hp damage could take out all other 1hp fighters, and thus be a good interceptor. And a fighter that does 2hp damage would waste some firepower shooting at other 1-hp fighters, thus would be better suited to attacking capitol ships. Then the ideal strategy vs another fighter-armed fleet might be a mixed strategy of small anti-fighter fighters and

Also, fighters could be low hit-point targets. Like maybe the smallest fighters would have one hit point. Then resupplying a carrier with more fighters could be a significant expense.

Idea for differentiating a fighter from a normal weapon: RANGE A fighter could be just like any other weapon, except that it has an extra square of range! You could send your squadron to attack without having to be adjacent to the target. Then designing carriers that aren't heavily armed (except for fighters) makes sense, because they will usually not be directly involved in the battle. This way it's not an arbitrary enforced prerequisite, instead it is a good choice for designin

Rioting rebels should have to go to war against the planet the same as players. Maybe not exactly the same game mechanics/screens, but they shouldn't just be allowed to have a planet cause the player didn't do something. They should have to fight against the local police/melitia just as hard. BUT if a planet is in riot (or tiles are in riot), then it's defense against attack is weaker. This could be psychological warfare/terrorism (depending on who's doing it!) and could be something th
