Hi. I haven't been using the replay feature yet. I'll try to remember to log a save the next time I notice that behavior. I suppose someone could determine what orders a fleet was executing. But you'd have to take my word for it, I think, that I didn't do that by mistake! I DID do that kind of thing by mistake quite a bit when first learning the game, but by now I'm sure I've seen it several times, as described above, where a fleet just picked up and moved, even though I hadn't bee

Napalm, You're completely missing my point. My machine is ABOVE the RECOMMENDED specs. Do you understand that? Incidentally, one of the ballyhooed features of this game in many reviews is that it is friendly to lower level machines. If the game really takes a machine that is FAR beyond the RECOMMENDED specs, then the game has a problem. The game says 256MB of video RAM is RECOMMENDED. I've got that. It doesn't say it needs a 768 setup like you have. Either it should run on a m
It's fairly common for my fleets to just pick up and warp halfway across the galaxy without any orders from me. I'm talking about fleets that were just left to guard a planet, which suddenly show up at another star. I never have any rally points set, I haven't given any stacked orders or special fleet orders, and these are fleets that had been static for quite awhile before suddenly taking off on their own, so it's not a matter of making a mistake in giving them an order.
Napalmenema, on an issue like this it's not a matter of machine specs, even if some have fewer problems with bigger machines. My machine has 2 GB of RAM, a 3 GHz Pentium D Dual Core processor, and an nVidia 7800 GTX with 256 MB of video RAM. That is beyond the recommended specs for this game and far beyond the minimum specs. I'm running WinXP, Svc Pack 2. I've also got my machine set up intelligently with a bare minimum of services running in the background, etc. Thi
NapalmEnema--what a name--you're wrong. I have a very strong gaming rig that greatly exceeds the recommended specs. I've only had this problem once so far, and only in one very huge battle. I'm used to battles involving well more than a 100 ships and no slow down on my machine at all. I suspect this is a result of new AI routines added in 1.04.
I just added a post to the General forum entitled Clogged Furball, which described an identical problem I had last night, in a TEC vs. Vasari battle involving about 400 total ships. It's not a computer problem. It's a game problem. I have a Dell XPS 600 gaming rig that is beyond the recommended specs. In my case, the game did not lock up. It appeared to keep running. And after about 10 minutes of real time, I was able to warp my ships away from the battle and go on to win the g
By the way, I was playing with the "normal" fleet size setting.
Ran into a situation last night I hadn't seen before: a battle so big the game got clogged up and could not resolve damage, although it did not lock up or stop. I was playing on a custom map with three stars, each of which had just five planets. One star was me (TEC). One was Advent. The last was Vasari. Both AIs set as Hard Random. I had wiped out Advent and colonized all of their planets. I was ranked #1 in everything except Fleet, even though I was maxed out on flee
Oh for crying out loud! Sorry for false alarm. It turns out I had not finished the research for robot and heavy cruisers, so I could queue them but not yet build them. Sakhari nailed it in his first response. Thanks. I'm familiar with that game mechanic. I've played many games over the past few weeks. I just got confused, because for some reason I had the mistaken idea that all current research was completed and that I was saving resources for fleet expansion instead of research for
I'm playing my first game with 1.04. I'm about 3 hours into the game, a medium random 4 x 4. But I can't go forward, because my cruiser factory has gotten stuck! I have one Frigate Factory, at my home planet. I don't have enough planets or logistics slots to make another one somewhere else. The frigate side of the factory is still working. My cap ship factor is working. But the cruiser side of the Frigate Factory has frozen up. I have four robot
I agree with the original poster. I've been a computer game fanatic since the 1960s (yes, that's right), but I prefer turn-based games. I loved Dune 2, the first RTS game, and I haven't liked any of the other RTS games, even Warcraft. So I haven't played a RTS game in years. And so I had a HARD time getting used to Sins. I find I tend to play at 6x or 4x speed, but frequently hitting Pause when things happen. The turn-based player in me just simply has to know what's going on everywhere
I don't understand the OP's problem. I've won several large 5-star maps, with fleet number set at normal, not even high. I wouldn't want to have to manage larger fleets. The key, I think, is to realize that ships are for offense, not defense. I like to build several levels of static defenses, typically 8 hangars, 1 repair, and a gun or two. I put that on all planets that are one-jump from a star, and all planets that are one-jump from those planets. I also make sure there is a frigate f
Well, good news. After leaving the computer off for about 10 hours, the smudges have gone away, so it seems not to be permanent damage, at least so far. We'll see after more long sessions of SINS. I do think this is worth commenting on, because I've never had any other program leave persistent images on this monitor. It took me awhile to track it down, but the monitor is model number Dell 2005FPW, which I see is a 20W, not a 21W as I said above. According to the manual, it supports fre
I'm talking about an LCD flat panel monitor, not a CRT.
Thanks for responses. xardas--nah, I often play four to six hours at a time, but I have the WinXP screen saver set to come on after 10 minutes of inactivity. This problem is unique to this game. sweZor--thanks, yes, I should contact Dell. But the monitor has worked fine on many games before, including Lord of the Rings Online where I've been known to be online for 12 hours straight. kryo--thanks very much. That's very encouraging! I've noticed that the smudges persist
I've been playing SINS for about 10 days and I like it a lot. But I notice today that it has apparently permanently damaged my monitor. I have a two-year-old at the time top of the line Dell XPS gaming rig, with an nVIDIA 7800 and a very nice Dell 21 inch flatscreen monitor. This is the best monitor I've ever had, runs flawlessly, never had any problems. But I notice after some long sessions of playing SINS that the interface controls are burned permane
Just got Sins last night. Very interesting. For the last few months I've been playing GalCivII again like crazy, but it looks like Sins will be the focus for awhile. I'm a 4X turn-based purist who said he would *never* buy an RTS again, and I'm apparently the only person who likes space games but didn't like the Homeworld games, so buying this was a gamble for me. But as I said, it's very interesting so far. But I have one minor quibble, which I don't think I've seen mentioned
Pretty classy note there, Frogboy. Sigh. I can see I'm about to lose another weekend on this game.
Let's hope this bug is fixed. It's the most important one on the current bug list. [Message Edited]
It's interesting to see a snippet of source code. But the comments here from Brad do not address 90 percent of the patiently presented evidence in this thread. Obviously everybody should avoid the word "cheat," which causes Brad's rationality to falter. So we should use a new word. I suggest "hyperventilate." Thus, it is obvious to me that the AI hyperventilates when it acquires certain crucial techs. It's still a great game, and I still win regularly at "painful" level. But
Whilst fixing things, may as well take out the line about "GIA" expenses in the domestic summary, since that is now separately covered by line items for destabilization and espionage.
Delighted to hear save problem was fixed in .59! Somehow I missed the announcement on that. Will test tonight.
Saving/loading does not work. If one creates a new save game, one can load it. But one can never overwrite it, even though you get the overwrite confirmation box and the hard drive seems to spin. Autosave still works. But that is not adequate, especially because the game inexplicably still does not have a "wait" command for units. Once a galaxy is settled, one might have hundreds of units. There are all kinds of situations where one wants to save before ta
CAN'T SAVE ANY MORE! Upgraded to 1.04.58 last night. No longer playable! The game can no longer save games. Autosave still works. But the game no longer actually overwrites a save game, even after it gives the confirmation box for overwriting. That's an interesting idea...a big galactic strategy game that can take days to play, and you can't save! Don't think this matters: I have a new Dell Precision 340 workstation running XP. Is there a
FWIW I've won lots of games with all AIs set at intelligent, and my impression is that the AIs do not cheat. Instead, I think one or more AIs just randomly tend to get better starting positions. At different times I've had problems with all of the AIs. Somewhat paradoxically, since they're always "saintly," I seem to have the worst time most often with the Altarians. After much tinkering, my own choice for best set-up is: Populists +20 diplomacy and +20 morale Diplomacy +30 (or
