So I did a bit more tweaks last night, turns out I hadn't actually been disabling Pedestrians (disabled it at one point but forgot to restart the game). If I turn Pedestrians and Outlines off I actually get acceptable framerate most places (it dips down to 29 or so if I have a couple cities in view, but I can deal with that). Still a lot worse than at the start of the game though. Pedestrians makes by far the biggest difference on my machine (which has a pretty weak CPU, for some

Chiming in with my experience: Like some others, the game starts out buttery smooth at 60FPS and then drops to 20 or less as the game goes on (especially when I have more than one city in view, but even when I have nothing but scenery in view it still tends to hover around 30). I have tried out the unofficial Turtle build and saw no real difference in performance, unfortunately. Compared the same save file between official build and this one, and my city-full area hovers aroun

Just want to chime in and say I'm having the same problem. Game starts out buttery smooth at 60FPS and then drops to 20 or less as the game goes on (especially when I have more than one city in view, but even when I have nothing but scenery in view it still tends to hover around 30). I tried out the unofficial build and it might have a helped slightly but not much, so I'm going back to the official for now since the unofficial also seems to break a few random things (l

I broad terms, I agree with you. The first couple games have kept my interest, and I feel like there is enough good writing there to keep it from becoming stale right away, but I really do feel that there is not enough variety for it to not become stale quickly. I too miss the sort of intense variety that FFH2 had. Compared to all the different factions in that game, which not only had completely different playstyles and tech trees, but also very different aesthetics, I feel l

Happened again, same situation, after choosing a tech. Hopefully three dumps of the same problem on three different occasions will help you track this down, it makes the game very hard to play on my computer right now since I am guaranteed a crash every couple of research breakthroughs. Third Dump

I hit the crash again! I had loaded the same game as before (from an earlier manual save, the autosaves both froze the game if I tried them), kept playing past where it crashed before and I was able to research another 6-7 techs before having the game once again CTD when clicking Continue after choosing a specific tech during a breakthrough. Agree with the OP's points, all the ones related to cities in particular have been bothering me since Beta 1. Especially compared to something like Civ 4 where they made it so easy to change what a city is building, I find that it takes way too many clicks to build or train anything, and too many clicks (that is, more than zero) to see what a city is currently building and how long it will take. It also bothers me how when you select a city, it locks your camera to it in a lim

The global resource pool is what he is talking about. It's not "annoying" it is an abstraction borne of the fact that it used to be the way you describe but people didn't like it, and more importantly, it didn't work for what the game is supposed to be, and that is ultimately not an intricate simulation of production chains (like the Settlers or Anno series). That kind of thing just adds too much micromanagement that gets in the way of what the game is really

My first crash so far, I had just finished researching the 3rd or 4th level of Civilization and after choosing a specific tech (Civics?) the game crashed to desktop. Link to dump: http://www.sinistersoups.com/elemental_logs/Elemental0_805-2010-07-03T01-02-10-806.zip Link to didiag (64-bit version, I did a diff and the 64-bit version seems to be identical to 32 bit but with a lot more details about the specific driver files so that's the one I uploaded): http:

While playing the new Beta 1Z last night, I took some notes about strange or counterintuitive UI decisions that I think should be considered: The faction customize screen gives you a list of different bonuses you can assign, with each entry having a check-box on the left and cost on the right. For some reason, this screen confused me when I first saw it, and I had to look at it several times to figure out which check-box belonged with which option. I would suggest abandoning th

When activating the autoexplore function, it seems like the unit will continue to autoexplore until you once again click on the autoexplore button in its actions tab (and there's nothing in the button state or the tooltip to indicate this). Even giving new commands to the unit while it is running autoexplore, causes it to fulfil the command you give it and immediately start to autoexplore again, meaning that if you tell it to move into a square, and it still has movement left, it will im

Perhaps this is by design, but I would expect the autoexplore option to send the units onto the various goody huts (treasure, bones, etc.) on the map, like it does in Civ 4 and GalCiv 2. From my tinkering last night, it seemed like the autoexplore explicitly avoided entering these squares, and instead focused only on uncovering the map. I had only tried it with the Sovereign however.

I want to second this, as I was going to make a thread on it myself (beaten!). For usability, I would suggest that these scrolling choice boxes need to at least have drop-downs when there are more than 2-3 choices in the list. While this kind of scrolling solution makes a lot of sense on consoles, I think drop-down menus are more helpful when you have access to a mouse since: A. Having a drop down clearly shows you all the choices that are available, letting you make
