Well, in literature one of the answers is "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" (Clarke's 3rd law) Which, over the years, brought on things like: Any sufficiently advanced magic is indisinguishable from technology. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarke%27s_three_laws Mostly magic is just stuff that operates outside of our current understanding of nature and physics, or appears to (i.e. stage magic).
