Just bought FE: Legendary Heroes via Steam. Downloaded and installed it. On launch, I get an Application Error alert panel with the message: The instruction at 0x770532a0 referenced memory at 0x04d86f9a. The memory could not be read. (CLick OK, Cancel, etc.) This is running on a HP desktop with 8GB of RAM, running Win7 64bit Pro (SP1). The debug.err file in My Games/Legendary Heroes simply says: DebugMessage: Version 1.20 las

Well, I've given up on 0.913 for now: it's just a bit too tedious, even on 'Normal' difficulty. My complaints have all be cited above (slow leveling, monsters wandering a significant distance to attack my outpost and cities, etc.). I play for enjoyment, and this version isn't terribly fun (IMHO). I'll repeat what I've said in another thread elsewhere in the FE forum a while ago, and what someone has already said in this thread: be careful not to mistake bet

Just barely started playing 0.913 and am already seeing some strange behavior. The two three champions my custom sov has found (Iriel, Jesselde and Irwin) all cast Haste on themselves automatically at the start of tactical combat, even though one of the two doesn't even have Air Apprentice as a trait. Also, my custom sov (Em) has Impulse as a trait, yet now can only get one shot/spell off in the first round of combat. Boo, hiss.<

Just finished a game (conquest victory) -- with one or two exceptions, I simply razed captured cities. Given the unrest penalty and the constant tightening of the financial screws over the last few beta releases (little or no gold, 90% discount on all sold items, unit maintenance costs), it's just easier to raze the city than to sit and garrison it with my power stack, fending off N counter-attacks while allowing the enemy to attack my own cities.

I scanned the bug titles and didn't see this, so... I'm having an intermittent problem. I go into a tactical battle, and the whole app runs about 10x (or more) slower than usual. Changing the animation speed doesn't help. I'll have a battle go at normal speed, then the next few will run in 'molasses mode'. It can take me a few minutes to finish a battle that should be over in seconds.

Y'know, if the game ceases to be fun, people will cease to play it. It's important to remember that most people -- most potential FE purchasers -- are not going to be sitting around and counting HPs, buffs, etc. They are going to grab a weapon and run around trying to kill things. They will learn quickly what they can kill at level 1 and what they can't. If they stumble across a great weapon that evens the odds a bit, or even gives them an advantage, they'll think it&#
The 10% value is good. Just make them cost more if we need more Gildar from them.
My point is, you can't buy (or use) wolf pelts, spider silk, demon horns, etc., so there's never a point where the 'full value' actually means anything. If a demon horn can only be sold for 16 gildar -- and never can be bought for 160 gildar or somehow exchanged for something else worth 160 gildar -- then it's misleading to ever</

I understand (don't necessarily agree with, but understand) why weapons, etc., are suddenly only worth 10% of their value rather than 50% of their value. But why bother to say that wolf pelts, etc., are worth a certain value when all you can get is 10% of that?

Looks as though I have a new game to learn. [e digicons]:omg:[/e] Seriously, that's a pretty stunning changelog. Congrats on all the hard work. I will try not to mutter too many obscenities under my breath as I discover that many of my tried-and-true approaches (path of the mage+impulsive+fireball/storm) are no longer available and that I now have to actually think about what I'm doing. ..bruce..

Along those same lines...and speaking of adding unnecessary features :-) ... there are times I've wished for the ability to store items in a given city, mostly so that I could have one champion leave them there and another come along and pick them up later. That would suggest a possible solution to the 'vanishing items' problem as well, namely that they get sent to the nearest city/output.

I actually started 38 years ago with IBM/360 Assembly (on punched cards) and moved up to FORTRAN and PL/1. But I still program a bit today, mostly in Java. But that's not the point. The point is that there are vastly more 'nifty' ideas for FE than there is time and staff to design, implement, and test them properly; these forums demonstrate that very well. I can very much believe that if the idea of c
Code isn't just copy and paste?
OK, that made me laugh out loud. Especially since in many circles, code is just cut and paste. :-) The canonical acronym used (tongue-in-cheek) in proposing a new feature is that it's a SMOP: a Simple Matter of Programming. I've actually argued for some decades that computer games are among the most difficult and sophisticated forms of programming, n

No offense at all to Elrhamlin, but -- as someone who did computer game design many ages ago and who spent many, many years designing commercial software in general -- I read posts like this (there are several others in this sub-forum) and sigh. Do you really not understand the very real tradeoffs of time and complexity that every single feature presents in developing software? Let's take the suggestion above. Yes, FE already has a unit-design subsystem. But look at it carefully:

OK, so I take my 'deadly' army into the Bhinadmi fissure. And one of my heroes attempts to cast a fireball spell (from a safe distance). But he can't complete the spell, since (1) Abeix's current tile is 'blocked' (I assume that's a feature, not a bug -- no directed spells would touch him, though indirect ones -- like Storm and Pandemoneum -- got through just fine), and (2) I have to target an enemy. And I'm stuck. Even autoplay (my usual tactical

I was playing FE earlier this afternoon, went and did other things for a while, and then came back and got this error 4x in a row on launching the game. Note that I'm posting this message from the same computer, so I clearly have 'net access; also, this is the same computer from which I have played all my many hours of FE, so it's clearly not a firewall issue (though I did double-check to be sure, and, yes, it's on the exception list for Windows Firewall). So...are your server

I've always been a city spammer for as long as I've been playing 4X games (which is...as long as they've been around). It's not the best strategy for a lot of games, but I really like the first three Xs (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit). I also tend to be a non-fighter in 4X games when possible; that is, I'll try to make myself strong enough to discourage the AI elements from attacking me, they chase after a non-conquering victory condition (if one exists).
- Starting a game always feels slow and the early technologies seem like we should start with them.
On the other hand, this doesn't bother me at all. I've been playing around with different early-game approaches as far as characters, units, cities and techs go. I like the fact that my characters have to dodge around a lot of dangerous units early on; it makes it all the more satisfying when I finally have a stack built that can go back and wipe them out. I smile
But currently my play style will always lead to me being extorted by the AI, bullied and then forced into waging a tedious war, that by merit of the AI's seemingly endless cities and resources, will become unwinnable or not worth the time and effort. I could adapt my playstyle to this new game but that would warrant a level of micromanagement that would render the game unenjoyable.
Yeah, this is my biggest complaint with the current beta -- compared to, say, Galact

Oh, I visited all the libraries as well. I actually made a second pass over every single square of the desert territory just to make sure there was nothing I had missed or that might automatically trigger. Nope. I will also mention something else that may or may not be a bug, namely that I have a hard time getting explorers to 'auto-explore'. It occasionally works, but quite often the command (either via the unit's command 'buttons' or via the X keyboard shortcut)

Playing 0.86 this afternoon and ran into three bugs in quick succession. First bug: I took a stack o' doom into the Desert Lands quest (whatever it's called) and not only defeated Torax but also wiped out every last unit in the quest territory. However, the quest green border won't go away, and the game won't let me build outposts in there (claiming it's someone else's territory). Note that the quest area is in the northeast corner of my territory and is surrou

Reply to Stack of Doom in FE Beta

Oh, and one more thing about tactical AI: the AI almost (though not) always goes after the 'weakest' units in your army first. That strategy makes sense in that you want to reduce the number of units that can actually carry out attacks. But there are times when it is smarter to wipe out certain stronger units first. When fighting an opposing army, my whole focus is on killing any archers first, which again is why initiative is so important: I want to take as many of them out as I can

Reply to Stack of Doom in FE Beta

Actually, I find that the current (0.86) beta provides some strong disincentives against all-hero stacks -- mostly that heroes tend to accumulate at a much slower rate than in EWOM due to a variety of factors (level, cost, etc.), and that it takes increasing amounts of time and research to bump your army size up by 1. If you try running around with all heroes, they tend to get killed on a regular basis (due to low levels of hit points) and then resurrected with various unbuffs (some minor, so
