So because they sold a game as single player, never posted any intention of making it multiplayer, and even conducted a poll of their customers which rated MP as a low priority, you feel somehow hard done-by? I['m no programmer, but even I know that writing code takes time and effort. You seem to think Stardock has infinite resources to instantly create features.

Don't neglect your stock markets either - those 10% morale bonuses add up. And make a point of making sure you get Harmony crystals and Ultra spices. I don't have much trouble at getting an overall happiness in the high 90s.

Don't misunderstand me - GalCiv easily is the best 4X I have ever played, and is definitely in my top 5 of all time. I think the OPs comments are rude and overstated, and that's just for the aspect I commented on. His outright insults and insinuations were just too laughable to dignify with comment - I guess I should have made that clear. I'm just kinda sensitive to the idea of any limit as to how smart the AI should be, because for me, the AI is the game. I love how pretty galciv2 is, bu

I would love to be able to set an arbitrarily large map. If it slows the game down, that's my problem - I'm planning to build an E6600 rig with 2Gb or even 4Gb this autumn... But the limiting factor seems to be how the AI handles large maps; as Richrf points out in #31. My idea of a pefect galciv map is nicely described in Iain M Bank's Player Of Games when the protagonist sees the game board for the first time. If I was King Of The World, then Stardock's next announcement woul

Frogboy, I dislike the OP's tone, but in one respect he does have a point. Whilst the AI in Galciv is the best I have ever seen in a 4X game, there are still things it could do better in order to make it a real challenge. I like playing Gigantic maps with lots of planets; I like huge, involved, slow games. So I want the AI to be good at this type of game too, and it's... well, it's OK. I play on equal terms with the AIs. Recently I discovered that backing off the number of

Agreed, Frogboy. He has nicely articulated what I kinda-sorta was thinking on the subject in a vague, half-formed sort of way. I don't want RTS combat, but I would like to be able to give my fleets a better range of instructions than "FIGHT TO THE DEATH". Even a simple menu of choices would be fine: to be able to tell a fleet "only fight until largest ship is destroyed / at 50% hp" or "always try and withdraw" (useful for collections of damaged ships returning to base for R

Yes you start from scratch every time but ships you have previously designed will show up in future games when you get the required techs). There are "core" (pre-designed) but you do not have to use them. Most players obselete them immediately. Designing your own ships is pretty much required once you're past the "traning wheels" difficulty levels. Oh and... YES! THIS GAME IS GOOD!

I'm not really interested in supermegahypergraphics FPS MMORPG games which require more PC hardware than the NSA have. Hell, if they re-made & re-vamped Quazatron, which I spent many long hours playing on my old Spectrum 48k, I'd be ecstatic. I'd like to see something based on the GalCiv universe - perhaps a RTS game, with scenarios able to be generated from actual GalCiv game events (I'm thinking ground invasions here...). or an Elite-style space sim / trading game (again, with the n

The AI never seems to use "Pearl Harbour" tactics. It gives loads of time for you to prepare for war. When V1m declares war, you'd better believe that a lot of ships will be destroyed by the end of the following turn. Building a big ole military base by the home planet of and donating it to a minor race at war with someone you don't like but don't want to fight is another neat tactic. Especially when combined with the sale of a few semi-obselete medium hull destroyers.

Well I play on "Intelligent" and can usually win even when drinking beer. I usually play the Thalans (Industrialist) and trade off a bit of social & military to get PQ and Lucky. First thing I would say is that for the first couple of dozen turns, you have to meticulously optimise eveything for maximum efficiency, Make sure you're not wasting any production. On my first turn, I obselete all core designs, make the fastest colony ship that can reach nearby stars and buy a re

Thank you for you answer, Cari. Assume I'm an ignorant idiot - why would the activation throw things? Obviously playing v1.0 isn't an option (you've spoiled me with excellent updates). BTW, I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but PLEASE don't make GalCiv3 Vista only! (I know you've said that you're not going to make a native linux version, and I respect the reasons why not)

I did look at their site, but I'm reluctant to draw too many conclusions from a sample size of 2. 1 guy with a soundcard problem setup could throw the rating... and I normally turn sounds off. It does look like they update their product fairly frequently, so the situation could improve with time. I just wondered if any regular players here had tried it.

I'm hoping to transition to Linux this autumn when I build my new PC (mmm.... Conroe!), but there's no way I can give up the sweet, tangy goodness of GalCiv2. If I have to, I'll keep a sandbox XP installation, but I'd rather run through WINEX, or if required, Cedega. I know that it's pretty unlikely there'll ever be a native Linux version. Has anyone tried this?
