You don't have to go ultra-expansionist. A smaller, compacter, developed empire can begin attacking before a large, diffuse, undeveloped one can. Roll the dice...

I find the computer slow at colonising. You have to continually optimise your ship designs. After Xeno Labs, you should sit on the engineer tree till you get impulse drive. Redesign your colony ships with each improvement - they'll be either cheaper or faster. Don't be afraid to upgrade your ships in mid-flight either.

I'm torn. I loved playing master of Magic. I even kinda enjoyed fuxx0ring with my autoexec.bat to free up 613Kb to get 'er to run. And I was just about to say that if you could do a fantasty RPG with GalCiv2-class AI, I'd LOVE it. I literally typed that. Then I deleted it. I've said and you've said: with a 4x game the AI is the game. I don't want GalCiv2 with different pictures. Spend the resources on a GC expansion pack instead - I'll get that, and happil

Class 0 planets are shown by a thin white circle filled with black; the thicker the white, the better the planet is. The really good planets are almost solid white. Also, if you click on the star, you'll get info on how many inhabitable planets it has and how many are already colonised (and by whom)

That's a very interesting journal. It's good to be brought to see another point of view. Now obviously I have expressed my opinion on AI, so you don't need me to do it again. I'll just confine myself to saying that casual players won't be turned into fans unless they really care about playing the game, and good (and continually improving) AI is surely a major factor in that, at least as much as "candy" is. Don't forget that "5%" (and I bet it's more than 5%) are also the ones that pre

You'll be at a serious disadvantage if you restrict yourself to the core ship designs. You don't have to spend hours getting each design to look just so (God knows, I don't), and really, it only takes a few seconds to knock up a new design. I obselete core designs as soon as they appear, including the initial scout / colony / constructor. You can make better ones from the get go, especially if you have racial miniaturisation ability. Thalans 4 lief!

That's why I suggested changing the *weighting* Before: Humans attack Snaathi, Drengin don't care Now: Humans attack Snaathi, Lord Kona is infuriated because he was at Tyrant School with their leader. Humans are ordered to make peace or ELSE!

Yes, but in that case you're asking Stardock to flip off the requests of many actual existing paying customers in order to satisfy the requests of possible perhaps maybe customers and a few who actually are. Look, I'd quite like to have say a simple hotseat MP option - I quite often play the game when I go round to my brothers - we consult & confer, but it might be interesting to play against rather than with him (he's more aggressive, I'm better at development). But not at the

Re: Unpredictable AI That's a GREAT idea! That would go a long way to solving the problem of being able to "game" the algorithms. Simply by assigning a small chance of the AI placing much more weight to an event than it normally would, you can really indiviualise each game and prevent that predictability that eventually kills the game.

OK, fair enough. BTW, carried on playing my first 1.2 game. I was somewhat surprised to find that the Torians actually had better weapon tech than me. Luckily, they went for beam, same as the Arceans I was preparing to crush. "Small" hulls with 22 moves, Mass Driver 86, Shield 50 should give those greenies a shock ;o)

Kosty, I resent that. I haven't submitted any metaverse games because the metaverse doesn't interest me. I don't see why that disqualifies me from commenting on the AI. I like to play the game on equal terms. If I wanted to play against a cheating game which gives the AI an unfair headstart, I'd play Civ3.... and be bored again.
