He seems to have the right of it, both as a fan of the genre and Stardock's previous offerings.

If, for example, I want to play a heavy magic sovereign "nuker" how well does this game work for me?&nbs

With their "attack 1" and 1 research point, these don't seem like incredible folks. Certainly cant get a gaggle of them and muck with spiders. I'm operating on the mentality that I'll have 1 adventurer\soldier type per army, and then leave the others to boost research and etcetera. OR,

Sorry for helping derail yer thread Arstal :) I agree that some pretty aggressive work needs to be done be it deep discounts pretty early in the lifecycle, embracing modders much moreso than most games do (to help patch some of the more obvious holes) and working hard on getting new stuff out there be it an expansion or just content packs. Some savvy marketing/PR can go a LONG way to repairing the game's currently tarnished image.

Try the melee sovereign ONLY if you want a boring game where you steamroll everything then finally get destroyed by the odd fight where something manages to easily one-shot you (very rare but very annoying since I normally take 0 damage on each and every auto resolved fight) or spiders.

I can make a very strong argument that Elemental is at best a very shallow example of a true 4x game. I'm getting incredibly sick of the stock fanboy response that anyone who's not deliriously head over heels into Elemental is a "hater" (English please), PC gamer shill or hasn't played the game. I've been following the game since it was originally release, hell since Stardock first made inquiries to purchase/use the MoM license, and am still a huge fan of Master of Magic, Age of Wonders (up through Shadow Magic), Heroes of Might and Magic, etc. I'm a dedicated proponent of the e

I had a similar experience with my min-maxed melee sovereign. Minimal essence, no spellbooks, just a seriously badass dervish of death. The only fights that were even remotely challenging were once where I could get one-shotted by the odd ogre or spiders and their "hey, let's web that guy the whole combat" mechanic.

Properly squad calculation would go a LONG way to making late game TC not suck insofar as being instagibbed by a mob of ill-equipped peasants and the like :)

Sweet, thanks Yarlen! Paths and the number of turns to get to your destination would be a huge godsend... if nothing else, it'll stop me from constantly dancing around some damned mountain range :)

Um, wow? Why don't you enjoy yerself some karma :) Whenever I find myself going back to AoW I try to simulate this "struggling to eke out an existence and prosper in the magic blasted world" feeling that Elemental seemed to be promising back in the day. Set the game options to no cities and start with a pioneer only for a very slow starting game.

As derivative as an all out MoM clone would have been, I'd have heartily embraced it... MoM is one of those rare games I still play to this day. Other than World of Warcraft (which I've been playing for 7 years this October) it's the longest semi-continuous gaming experience I've had. Don't get me wrong as I'd have prefer Elemental to have it's own distinct flavor, but as of the current build it's just a very bland sandbox. It has tremendous potential both from offic

(a) You sir are full of win :) (2) I'd much prefer to stick with negatives for heavier and more unwieldy items (you try lugging around a 15 pound hammer and tell me how much you enjoy the experience). I really like where they were going with plate armor though it's easily worked around by just going down the magic research path and getting equally awesome armor with no movement penalties... oh and a lower cost.

Xadie hit the nail on the head. Unless you have some pretty horrendous starting luck (surrounded by sovereigns who want to suicide against you too quickly on ridiculous) losing with a melee sovereign is nigh impossible if you pay any attention. Adventure and Magic tech trees can easily boost said sovereign into the stratosphere insofar as increasing his or her killing power. Granted there are a couple of late game fights that might hamper said one-man or woman killing ma
