This is a point that has received extensive coverage, before. I can't say I disagree: it seems odd that governors would have to gain experience by doing something (combat) that takes them away from governing, the thing they're supposed to do. But at this point, I'm not convinced governing champions are even worth the effort. They seem to be nothing more than second-rate melee or magical champions, depending on how you develop them.

Maybe make it player-optional. I like the idea of items I can't use immediately, even if I take a big chance to get them. On the other hand, I can see where somebody else might figure they risked it, they deserve to profit at once from that risk.

As I play Pariden a lot, I'm working with a magic-using race that takes a lot of time to get its spells and mana act together. Long game's for Pariden. I would think the length of the game is a strategic factor depending upon race.

A good AI isn't typically adaptable, but it does know how to milk game design choices to excellent effect. Are those cities you're facing possibly a higher level than yours? Are you sure the troops you're seeing now weren't actually around before, off somewhere in the fog? That the AI didn't sacrifice other options, such as running up the magic tree, for going up the defense one much further than you have? Just some thoughts.

Perhaps just as significantly, I think there are a lot of people who have felt this personal tie, or even spiritual kinship, to Steven Jobs. Nothing wrong with that. <br /

Put it this way: I will vote for any seriously meant alternative to the current food and grain combination. I guess "soil fertility" is among my top choices, but I'm not picky.

Perhaps it would help if the terms of the non-aggression pact (ie, "We will treat your borders like a sieve, and proliferate like rabbits all around your territory") were stated out front, or at least linked to before you made your decision.

What did you guys learn in school to not know such a basic thing> (not being sarcastic here)
I'm a native English speaker and writer, and "fertility" has a number of associations in the language aside from those related to agriculture. I'm also not being sarcastic. "Food" and "grain" are confusing

But if you really want to help out, the point isn't to work around it, but (as SeanW suggested) supply the developers with a saved game. Because they've repeatedly stated that this AI conduct is not supposed to be occurring. I'm sure they would very much like to see your game, and figure out how they might improve their beta. Better now, than after release.

If they say it costs 100 000 dollars to buy, that doesn't make it more right for you to take it for free. Your only choice should be whether you decline or accept the terms. But you think it's ok to take the product and ignore the terms. Piracy may not be stealing, who cares. Your actions a

Interesting to see they're charging now for adding religion back in an expansion to a game the developers boasted about (in interviews) before release as getting rid of religion. Because no one wanted it. I suppose for the next expansion they'll add in a way to see all the modifiers affecting diplomatic decisions. ;)

Oh, hell. Let's see: King of Dragon Pass: 600+ plots, any two thirds or so of which won't appear in a given game. Fine simulation of running a barbarian tribe in a fantasy world. Great strategy in developing that tribe, its expansion, friends and foes. Really unique game. Master of Magic: Yes, I know it was Civ II with magic, but it's all done so well, and the five unique spell systems were such a kick.

So: nicer graphics, cleaner interface, spiffy-up a few existing game systems. The Youtube piece leaves me thinking changed will be more micro-incremental than anything else--not that I won't object to a prettier, more sensibly organized EU. But I have to wonder whether it will even have all the features EU3 had after its expansions. We'll see. Game's still a long way off.

You realize that Brad knows all this, but has to write all the tedious and book-long AI rules, which takes a great deal of time?
64-bit desktop CPUs have been mainstream for the better part of the last decade. It's time to move up. I suspect that's the stretch of road paved with the money the latter won't spend on 64-bit games. It's entirely up to each company how far they want to push the envelop

Essence shows up as a third figure over suitable squares for settling. If you see A-B-C rather than A-B over such a square, then you've got a square that offers values to farming, industry, and essence. And the AI will call you puny even if you have many cities, as long as you have very few troops. It still doesn't understand the concept of quality vs quantity.

Or you could uninstall the game, reboot, and reinstall using the latest full game.

Not always; in my experience, about half the time. Right now I've got two melee types, and my leader casts Growth on both going into a heavy battle. The first always shrinks visually (though the spell Growth is noted on the character), and the second grows visually.
