I'm hoping you guys can nail the "out of memory" issue after ~250 turns or so on Win7 64/ATI systems soon (still happens with this patch), because there's just no point to playing at all since it's impossible to finish a game. It's a shame because I do otherwise find it enjoyable in its current state.

Great to hear about the "in character" dialog for the AI. The snark was always something that took me out of the moment in GalCiv. And based on some of the screen shots you've shown of the release version the writing does feel greatly improved overall, so now I'm actually looking forward to reading the story and the new quest text.

On more than one occasion playing the beta I have been irritated when zooming in to look at the pretty graphics and having to get super super close before my unit (beavis: heh) has sized down to a somewhat realistic size. I don't like having the characters be giants when they're standing next to camps and buildings. Having the units be fixed sized (and smaller, obviously) and only scaled larger once they become pewter figurines would be my preference.

This version is by far the most stable of the 1Z beta releases on my Windows XP machine. I'd been unable to go more than 10 or so turns with the last two updates, but this one can easily go into the hundreds of turns without any real issues. For me it's definitely solid enough to move into beta 2, so great job!

If you mean it crashes right after "Creating World," then try deleting your Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic\Screens folder as per this thread: https://forums.elementalgame.com/379829

None of the Beta Z versions have worked for me. They all crash after "creating world." The previous beta at least started fine. I reported the issue here when 1Z first came out and I wonder if it is being looked at at all - https://forums.elementalgame.com/379829

I was (am) listening to Green Man when I loaded the forum and saw this thread. Not much of a coincidence since I already knew that he'd died and so has been on my mind, but I wasn't expecting to see it reported here. Anyway, sad news.

This happens to me as well. I never had any issues launching a game in the previous beta, but I have been unable to start even once in 1Z; It consistently crashes right after "creating world" no matter what settings I use. I tried deleting the files in "My Documents" to no avail. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5547391/Elemental0_298-2010-04-10T16-54-20-187.zip http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5547391/DxDiag.txt

After playing around with the beta a bit, I gotta say, the whole concept of your army being made up of individuals pulled from your towns really excites me. When I play games like this I like to immerse myself as much as possible and I think, psychologically, knowing that my military units were drafted right from the towns and that I have designed and equipped them myself is going to really personalize things and make it so much more fun. Definitely one of the best things about the game IMO.<

[quote who="vieuxchat" reply="2" id="2557981"]There is already a random element : the color of techs. Red techs have less chance to appear on breakthrough. Yellow ones, will almost surely appear. Green ones will appear. When you see them in the research screen it just shows what you "might" get when you reach a breakthrough. I like your ideas, and I'm really hoping a random element is introduced into the research system. The "cookie cutter spec" problem is a killer in games. When you already know right at the start exactly how your research path is going to go until the end of the game it just takes so much fun out of it. Of course, random tech creates a balance problem, which is more of a priority now since Elemental is going to feature multiplayer. But the game will already have one major "random" eleme

I was just thinking about this very same thing recently, as it is one of my main gripes about the GalCiv games. I like humour. I like fun; that is why I play games. But I'm also one of those dorks who likes to be able to immerse myself as much as possible in whatever I am doing, and the jokey text in GalCiv, especially from the civs, is really distracting. It's a reminder that I am just playing a game, and almost like if you were reading a fantasy novel and having o
