There was a problem with the multiplayer server which has been cleared up. If you are still having trouble, try closing Impulse and running the following file: http://sd.stardock.com/curthendzell/fix_registrations.reg Make sure to follow the link in Internet Explorer, as other web browsers will not handle the file type correctly.
The way our MD5 system works (and this is an over simplication, I'll grant you, but it works for our purposes), is similar to taking a sentence, assigning number values to each letter (a=1, b=2, etc), and adding up the corresponding numbers to get a sum. That's your "MD5" (though the real MD5 creates a much more unique signature than that). Then tell someone that sentence, and have them write it down. If they misspell something, then when they add up the di
Try verifying the application through Impulse: -Launch Impulse. Hold down the shift key, and right click on the entry for the application and choose "Verify Installation" -Impulse will check the integrity of the installed application. You should be given feedback as to the state of the installed application. -If errors are found, an update should be made available in Impulse. Try updating to the latest version of the game through Impulse and see if that helps.
It's possible old data from previous patches are gumming up the works. Try going here: XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic Vista/7: C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic Delete everything in that folder except the sig.bin file and see if that helps.
I seem to remember there being a conversation about this exact thing recently, so I'd expect it to be addressed in some way.
The bad thing here is that I see nothing in the game that stops infinite city spamming
Well, for one, on a finite sized map, there is only so much space in which to build these cities. It also means, you have to put more into defending those cities, so that's more resources tied up. You also may spread yourself thin, which means those cities are more vulnerable to being taken over. Plus, if your food source is he
You may need to turn on the 'show hidden files and folders' option in explorer, but the folder is there. You can also get to it by typing it in the address bar manually.
In the upper right of Impulse, there is a blue question mark. Click on it, and select 'View error log'. Take a look around the time that the download was supposed to finish and see if there's anything interesting. Feel free to ignore 'Updated network xml did not have expected revision' items, as they're not really errors, just messages.
If you use the 'Download and Archive' feature in Impulse (right click on the game), you can download a .archive file, which you can transfer to the other computer, and use Impulse to restore the archive (blue menu button, upper left). This will get you the full game, not the update, but it will be the most up-to-date version available.
If you're playing as Kingdom, there is a first level research item you need to get in order to build on the shards.

What did the cursor look like when you moused over him/her? Did it change to the two swords cursor, or was it a speech bubble? Or a... third thing?
