Same here, but after 2k+ turns, virtual memory used was 1.7 GB and the Ram size varied between 200K and 460K. It finally crashed, with looping sound. Was running in windowed mode. Here are my prefs.ini and debug.err . Unfortunately, it didn't save the crash dump.
Same thing as this . If you have AA enabled and enter the unit design menu, the framerate drops. Also, to clearly see the units, I entered the new unit screen.
I've managed to replicate this. The relevant debugs are submitted via fogbugz . I tried 4x AA, 2x AA and AA disabled. With AA enabled, the debugs are of considerable size, around 2 MB. With AA disabled, the debug is 70 KB. Yes, I've disabled AA in the game options. Also, I was running full screen.
On my system: Core2Duo E6750 @ 2.66 GHz, @ GB Ram, Win XP Sp2, Geforce 8800 GT, this was caused by antialiasing being set to 4x. Disabling AA resulted in fast gameplay again.

Performance wise, it runs OK on an Asus X59sl: Core 2 Duo T5450 @ 1660 MHz RAM 2048 MB Windows XP Professional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 256 MB
This enemy Sovereign was able to build a town just inside my teritory. debug.err Also, the savegame with this situation crashed. Submited logs to fogbugz
