Devil's advocate here... The problem people have isn't that Stardock and Mr. Wardell don't "get it". Everyone who follows PC gaming knows that Stardock gets it. The problem is that Elemental is not in what most people would consider a release state. Not for a game that costs $50, and certainly not from a developer which has publicly stated that gamers have a right to demand games be released in a fi

I can go pirate this game and I can go pirate any game with DRM as easily. The only difference is one company was stupid enough to put effort and money into trying to stop me. And to an extent, given that the games behind the DRM are equal, this is the better product, since there's no 'treat everyone as a criminal until proven otherwise' attitude.
Civ 5 can go to hell if anything elemental is way better, so freaking over Civ4's city spam.
wat Did you even play Civ4? You're playing it on the lowest difficulty, then sure, spam cities. Play ICS as Yang in SMAC and then you'll know the meaning of city spam.
The game's not finished. It doesn't feel like it's out of beta yet. Though this isn't the 0-day release.
Seems like an optimal decision. It's 100% true that a lot of people ignore the campaigns and god straight for the sandbox. Some games don't even include campaigns. Designed maps will start springing up as soon as it's released, anyway. MoM was only randoms. HoMM was only predesigned [for me, I didn't like the map generator]. Civ4 was all randoms.
Sorry to interrupt but really guys? People are arguing over the fact the beta can't be played 4 days before release? Is it really that big of a deal? Anyway, I am sure much of it is because you look forward to a great game so peace, love, joy and all that stuff!
Yeah, I saw my Impulse show a new update, tried to grab it, it give me a popup saying my registration's not valid - I come here because I just
+1 this would save a lot of time.
I like it, but this would fit in an expansion or something - there's a lot more to finish with the core gameplay first.
These would help a lot. Top bar is growth meter + city name and bottom bar is production meter and production name. City size in big number to the left, unit icon in circle to the right.
Ppl like using the controller to play games I dont, the primary reason I don't have a console.
You're not everyone though. I'm heavily on the PC side, but I know people who'd rather play FPS on the console because having the limitation adds a different aspect to the gameplay. Turning rate is a lot more limited, and I can see that being more fun. You can spin around way too fast in some FPS games.</p
Agree with every point. UI particularly.
+1 for 1gpt/city
It's like a blotto game. Amusing.
EUIII has the best example of diplomacy in any game I know of. It's fairly complex but very easy to understand. I'm not sure such a sophisticated system is within the scope of Elemental. The casus belli system is brillaint, but it relies on having factors such as stability, prestige and reputation.
Ditto on all counts. Also getting this: It's like that in the unit creation and production windows too.
And with 3B it's back again [though I'm now running XP].
damage numbers pop up
This! Also for neutrals hurting settlements - hitting presitge and destroying a single random building are a good way of making the faction suffer without it being silly.
Agree with the general sentiment. Don't like the idea of movement rolls, but rolls in general are a good thing for variability, so long as they're not so variable they can totally change the course of a battle which looked like it would only go one way.
Hey - you're comparing it to D&D where CON affected a few things including the Concentration rolls [if you're hit you have a chance to mess up the spell you're casting] of spellcasters as well as the HP, and rolls against many other effects like poison. I agree with the thread - too many stats means wizards get left in the dust. I agree with getting rid of WIS, and having Essence and Intelligence both determine max. mana, and essence the speed of regeneration. Also the spe
Good suggestion. I'll add a few ideas: - Different city icons for different faction-cultured cities. - A selection of similar icons within each faction. - Designate units/armies as 'Garrison' and they no longer show unless you browse the city. - Formation of units into armies using a system like Europa Universalis III or Call to Power - the civ4 way is confusing.
Looks great! One thing I'd change is how borders look so very square. Would it be possible to make them look more curved? Or use a cross shape for influence like Civ4?
I'm not fearing city spam so much now as I am fearing city GLUT (spreading out so far all the cities are touching one another or nearly.) What's the use of pioneers when all you need to do is expand your borders?
I
+1 for the general idea of a different type of more defence-oriented city. Medieval 2 is a good example of this - two types of city and the ability to build small forts to hold troops.
By the same token that Civ5 is copying Elemental, Elemental is copying every game before it which offered figurines. Just because they're close together release wise and are a bit more similar doesn't mean they're copying. If Civ5 came with a pewter dragon, OTOH...
Such a tease with those tiny screenshots! Looking forward to this.
