This is a typical dumb trailer. It gave no sense of what the game was like, and thus was essentially worthless. I came out of it less sure what kind of game Tropico will be than before watching, and am now unable to decisively identify the genre. Maybe I'm just not the sort of person that marketing groups target?

I think banning guns or knives or karate or whatever is generally foolish and a hallmark of an oppressive society, but I would not espouse protec

Every good olde ocean has giant whirlpools, too. I like the sea monsters, though - they've been missing from most games. Giant krakens would be nice. And maybe even an immense floating compass rose with wicked-sharp points, somewhere near the edge of the world...

I liked the Age of Wonders intro, which maybe had a budget between $500 and $5000. Much better than the sequel's intro, I thought. Overall I find game trailers annoying, as they generally cater to speed junkies with severe ADD who are trying to artificially induce an epileptic seizure as well.

A closed alpha is one where they abduct the participants in black helicopters and lock them in the testing dungeon, tossing in food and patches now and then. It smells rather bad since it's right below the programming dungeon, which is not locked, since the programmers never leave anyway. To prove this...&n

It shouldn't surprise you that a lot of people are 100% sure to not be selected. I have not pre-ordered and have no interest in participating the the alpha, and I'm sure a lot of people are in my boat. Alpha-testing is not "fun".

I thought the extremely tedious trade was not fixed in the expansion. I really abhor its trade model. It was addressed in the expansion, but not fixed. Auto-sending traders to some place is a great way to bankrupt yourself at a bad time. I found a lot of problems with the original, even though it had a lot of promise. So I shelved it. Eventually, I picked up the expansion that promised to solve all the niggling details, but I didn't really find it to be m

But you should only do that if you dislike Microsoft and using the .NET framework so much that don't want it on your computer anymore.

"Masssterrr... I have made a new bow for your wicked killingses pleasure, mwahahaha! Most new games are not very good, since they are more 'corporate'. Older games also have the advantage that they could be made by just a few people, which allowed a strong vision and more focus on gameplay. I can't strongly recommend anything else, but you might try Japanese tactical RPGs such as the Fire Emblem series or Yggdra Union. They're cute, at least :) Oh... and Disgaea<

Star Control 2 is vastly better than Space Rangers 2. And... it's open-source freeware, now. If you've not played the original X-COM, you really should. It's not easy to get running on all computers, though - about as difficult as Master of Magic. SC2 and X-COM both have VGA graphics. A more modern alternative to X-COM, similarly good, is Jagged Alliance 2. That one should run fine on any Windows system.

To clarify my stance, I did not much care for the Gal Civ 2 ship component research in which Lasers v7 and Lasers v8 might be identical except one would take 33 space, and the other 31 space. It's annoying to even get notifications about tech advances so trivial that they often do not even change the design or power of a single ship. Tech increases should always be strong enough to be useful, in the course of a normal game. However, when you consider the constant amount of

+1 vote for long development cycle with constant feedback. Nobody reviews v1.1 of a game, and most gamers' initial taste will be 1.0, as well. There are a lot of games I've tasted and spat out because the initial release lacked polish - and most of them, I never touched again. For all I know, they're playable by now... but (especially when I have lost the CD and/or serial key) I'll never know. I HATE wearing out the newness of a fresh game before it gets spit-s

Anyone who has not played Dominions 3, and likes fantasy-themed turn-based strategy games, should at a minimum try the demo. It is absolutely phenomenal, and very, very deep. You can play for months and months and still discover new things constantly. I loved Age of Wonders and Master of Magic, and this is sort of like a cross between those and Shogun: Total War. But much more complex. Unlike those three, you do not directly control battles, only give troops init

Instead of "Benefit = log(level)", sometimes it works better to have "Benefit = root(level)", so that you don't end up in a situation where diminishing returns diminish too fast. Antec Solo is the best case I have ever used; in fact, the only case I've ever liked of every case I've had to deal with (mine or someone else's). After a lot of research, I bought one for my parents, and the thing is really super-quiet, really nice-looking (black model), and very solid. I got an Antec NSK6580 for myself when I noticed that it was on sale for $50, less than the price of a power supply alone (it comes with a decent-quality PSU). My thought was that "Well, i

1) How will Elemental keep the end-game fast and playable, and prevent tedium? Late-game Master of Magic (and to some extent, Civilization and MOO2) tend to get bogged down in building reports, such that choosing the next building for many, many cities took 95% of my time. Gal Civ II got bogged down with fort-building, and Age of Wonders got bogged down with gigantic battles involving dozens of units that started really far away from each other. I ne
