Is there any hope for me being able to play multiplayer?

I recently purchased 2 copies of Elemental and applied the patch (to 1.1 I believe). I opened the game, created a multiplayer game, and had my fiance connect. Without doing anything else, I hit escape, clicked on Save Game - the dialogs disappear (it does not prompt me to choose a save name or anything), leaving a scrolling background, and then the game returned to the world screen with horrible lag. Task manager reported Elemental jumping to 70% CPU. debug.err contain
