I love Elementerra!!! Good to hear another version is in the works. I swear I posted this suggestion before, but I can't find it... Could you add some way to save the settings used to generate a map? I use close to the same settings every time, and it gets tedious having to tweak everything back to where I want it.
Yeah, I'll try to get that in next time around.

Healing and resurrection is one of those crazy game mechanics like teleporting. It has an inordinately large footprint on the resulting fiction. When you can instantly heal wounds caused by battle, while the battle still rages, you can no longer explain why anyone should ever die in this universe without some major 'deus ex machina'.

If so any chance of releasing the source so others can continue your great work? Thanks!
I'm revving up to do this now, but there will be an extended planning stage. If you think about how powerful wizards battle it out in movies and cartoons, there are alot of defensive spells in action. One guy flings a fireball, and his opponent surrounds himself in ice or something. Perhaps all DD spells need to take a full round to cast, so that in every case you can counter it if you have the right magic.

Wow. Organization. I'm not sure I fully appreciated it before, but watching this development process unfold has really been an eye-opener. One thing I remember most about the beta were the frequent, sudden, sometimes unsettling changes in overall direction. I knew there was something not right about it but I couldn't fully articulate it. A project this big simply cannot turn on a dime in two weeks without its pieces and parts flying out helter skelter. Bugs and instability do nee

I would say that without an automatic rifle or some other modern fighting vehicle, no one man on earth could take on ten men of any stripe in melee combat, or even women, as long as everyone involved is willing to fight. As the one man must deal with each adversary, in that second he does so the others have every opportunity to interfere with his actions. I once got into a scrape on my football team with some jerk, and about 7 guys (civilians mind you, as am I to be fair.) m

I think thats alot of assumptions regarding our peasant. The guys fighting with the Taliban are basically illiterate peasants with basic weaponry, and while they tend to get the worst of things against highly trained American soldiers, occasionally they do some damage, and they do come to fight, even with a much greater tech disadvantage than our scenario with armored knights. If your peasants are angry or fearful enough of what your intentions are, I would say they need to be taken seri

The map absolutely needs goals for exploration and expansion. Otherwise you're missing 2 x's from the 4x. Now that we can place resources on maps without the randomization, I can address many of these issues with Elementerra. I'm done with the initial version of PerfectWorld3 for Civ5, so now I can come back to work with Elemental for a while. The only problem is that we are having a baby in a couple of weeks, which probably means that my free time is shot... I'll see what I can do.</

This is one of thoes questions where reality might be very different than what we actually want in game. Real hand to hand fighting is highly random, with too many factors to fully predict what the outcome may be. If this were not true, then war wouldn't exist because if the outcome were known to all in advance, the weaker would always obey the stronger. In fact the outcome depends on exactly who the peasants are and who the knights are individually. I would expect there to exist in

Theres a bit of a pattern I'm noticing in my games that I'm not satisfied with. Because techs get more powerful as you progress through the tree, I'm finding that spreading my research out is punishing me more than helping me. I very often find myself advanced in one tree and completely neglecting the others. There are some very crucial techs midway up these trees that you kinda need to get first before you think about other trees. One that comes to mind is the training of groups of soldiers.
Quite straightforward is an understatement. It is dumbed down, in a bad way. I enjoyed playing Civ5 a LOT more than I did elemental, when they were both released. However, Civ5 has almost no re-playability. I greatly enjoyed it for the ~30 hours it was fun, then I never started it again. That was the time it took me to get the "full experience", to see everything in the game and milk the gameplay for what it was worth.
</p

Thanks for the info, I just really needed to get my "strongly worded email" out there.
If I were you though, I'd hang on to it. There has been big, big drama connected to the release of this game, but things are playing out to our advantage. You are in the role of a beta tester, which you didn't
Interesting post. I agree with darklander0 that Intelligence should be renamed Magic under the new system. I strongly dislike the "exception" that sovereigns don't need intelligence to cast certain spells but champions do. I understand the rationale is to allow channelers to have low int and still be able to cast spells, but then I think it makes int much less important. If you have low int, you should hire champions with h

All this stuff sounds like an enormous improvement. I do still have concerns about the I go You go combat. Especially in range combat, you have a situation where the team that can attack first can greatly hamper their opponents ability to retaliate, simply because they went first. I would very much like to see an initiative system, so that every battle doesn't play out like an ambush.

There's alot of talk about culture flipping in this thread, and I wanted to point out that the issue is more complex in a fantasy game than in a game like Civ. In Civ, your dealing with people whos culture changes according to their interest, while in fantasy games factions can sometimes be different species with completely irreconcilable needs and wants. For example, you wouldn't want your city to join another faction whos inhabitants survive by eating your

ZOC in its traditional sense does provide some opportunities to inject strategy into a game. Elemental does not currently use ZOC in that sense but it might some day. Its good to have ways beyond direct damage to manipulate your opponent. I also prefer 'Sphere of Influence'. 'Flatulence Spread Matrix' seems too faction specific.
I think calling a player's territory/area of influence "Zone of Control" is confusing, because this name is usually used for a completely different concept in gaming.
I agree with this. ZOC as a gaming term is definately taken. We need a new word for a factions territory/borders. As long as I can tell what land I can use without ambiguity, it should be fine. Curved corners is a nice touch, but the game rules enforce s
Based on Elemental's launch and what we know about what happened, more game designers aren't really needed...To be honest, that's EXACTLY what the team needs...1-2 people who focus on NOTHING but design (with the added benifit of Derek being a kick-ass manager). The major problems arose from everyone on the team trying to wear too many 'hats', and since we all wore the 'design' hat, you ended up with a game where the individual peices

They've taken extraordinary steps to improve Elemental's future, 1.1 is no longer what I'm looking forward to. I'm not sure I'm even going to try 1.1, because things are going to change a great deal I imagine. I'm content to wait til next year.

I think resources present an opportunity to make each game very different from another game. Basic mundane things like wood, iron, food etc. don't excite me very much any more. It wouldn't bother me a bit if stuff like that was just automatic. What I would like to see resource wise is an eleborate network of rare resources that you can use to put spells and special equipment together. There should be so many resource types that you would have to play 5 or more games to see them all, a
