I most certainly have not seen incidents of your last two examples. I am sure that they may exist, but it is rare at best, and is most defintely not a stance that Stardock themselves takes. What you're describing is really no different than the registration process you need to go through before you can post on most internet forums, so by your logic, a large portion of the internet employs "DRM" making the term pretty much meaningless.
Actually, DRM is NOT a specific form of copy protection, it
That 1UP review talks about the robust multiplayer in the game. It's laughably obvious the reviewer hardly played the game.
If you noted the "editor's note", they pointed out MP was not available at the time of review, and that he was quoting the Elemental website's feature: Robust multiplayer. The reviewer was saying that a shit AI CAN be redeemed in a "robust multiplayer".
It's a shame this "apology" comes after it hit media outlets. Otherwise, I might have even considered it sincere. Being on the receiving end of one of Brad's rages, I can honestly say it's a shame the CEO of a company acts like this. :(
After reading this thread I feel like throwing up. To many sickening sycophants patting Brad on the back for a disaster. His post shows nothing but severe damage control, and point #7 is just disgusting (reviewers should review what's pressed on the disk since that's when the developer says "it's ready", not the game after 5 patches).
Let me say that I'm glad that most people seem to like the game.
I think you are mistaken.
Again I would suggest this is an unfair assessment. At launch there were no plans to open up the Civ4 SDK to allow for DLL modding, so that there are no plans to do it for Elemental is notwithstanding. That came about in Civ4 because the Apolyton and CivFanatics guys gave a lot of really good arguments as to why it should happen, and Firaxis agreed with what they were saying and opened it up.
Sorry but I need to correct you
Only thing I want to say in this thread, is that if the idea is to get people to play this game for 10 years, then you need to start with a great game. Unfortunately, IMO EWOM misses that mark. That is a subjective opinion. While i do agree that there are many unfinished features and untapped potential in Elemental, that didn't stop me from wasting every evening since release just playing the game and having fun d

Will this be included in the day 0 patch?
From an experienced modder, first thing you need to do is play the game a few times all the way through and learn it. You say you want to mod as soon as possible, but what things do you want to mod? Spend a couple days just opening files and looking at them. If you've no experience with modding or reading raw files it may take a few days to understand what's going on. After you've learnt the game, and learnt the files, next you need try some simple things to ensure
Cool thanks. I'll be at TechEd in Queensland that week, but I'll be able to download it after that.
My version is saying that it needs activating now, and when I paste in the serial number I got before it says already registered. Does this mean I have to wait till release even though I have the beta?

I just quickly flicked through my two years of posting history on this site, and only 21 posts have I replied where "Steam" was mentioned, and a lot of those posts I didn't mention the word it was in the reply I was quoting. And all of those in the last few months. So what if I like Steam? I don't

I find Maxis/EA's continuation of the Spore theme personally insulting. I purchased Spore after reading advertising material and seeing demonstrations of the game promising evolution in a box from a science perspective. Instead I got a basic creature editor and a simplistic world to walk around. EA is on my ban list because of that fraud.

So yeah, I can comfortably say the cost of using Steamworks is considerably less then rolling your own solution. It's hard to beat $0. The 30% cut is typical of the Steam store and doesn't depend on Steamworks. What does Valve get out of it? Well, every game with Steamworks increases the value of Steam as a platform, and drives more users (in particu
