If heroes are plentiful, then it'd be neat to form groups (sort of like Majesty 2 had) and have them go off and do things. If they're rare and powerful, then that's not really feasible, which may not be a bad thing as you likely can't expect Elemental to have that level of detail on heroes and still be playable as a 4x game.
With the news that magical damage has been boiled down to one type I was worried that all spells that do damage will be exactly the same only with cosmetic differences.
I was worried that damage types caused that, because you would need to make identical damage spells of each type. with one type of magical damage you can focus damage into one or two schools (fire comes to mind as a good choice)
The cost having to post quests to npc adventurers? prestige. and an adequate reward for it.
I was thinking that quests would be initiated something like this. You'd find a hut or whatever it would trigger the quest and if accepted, a new object on the map would be generated where the player would go to for the next part of the quest. Sword of Fire, Sword of Ice etc. All of these weapons would do the SAME dmg type: arcane in the vanilla game...am I correct? Oh well...thankfully we can add new dmg type categories via modding, so "hardcore" or more serious strategy gamers can have their fun as well. MoM was a good game, but it was way too simple in regard to the tactical combat system.<br

I am certainly curious to see more of the diplomacy, physical combat, and magic (aside from the damage types argument) systems mentioned in this post, depending on how fleshed out they are at the moment. You could go the adventuring route and seek a sage from a mountain to tutor him. You could build a lot of educational buildings and have the prince move into that town. You could use your economic might to bribe the school officials. use your military to intimidate the
What an interesting question! *Geoff the slug lives in a swamp and recently had a bunch of sluglings. You need to take his sluglings into some sort of magically protected cave where they can grow in relative safety. But when you get there you find that a colony of slime monsters has made a home inside, so to make it safe for the geofflings you have to clear out the slimes. *The silver surfer dropped the infinity gauntlet somewhere on your continent.
In my own little browser game I am going for a base value pluse a random value. I think this makes for nice variation. An attack can have a base damage at 5 and then 1-5 random on top of that (random example here). There is one VERY important thing to remember. If you calculate damage for each unit in a battle then such calculations are problematic. Imagine 1000 swordsmen doing an attack at 3D6. 1D6 will give you on average 3.
This is precisely why we shouldn't discuss game mechanics in developer journals. No where did I say or imply that battles woudln't end up with people being fried via acid or fireballs blasting away or fear spells or what have you. But at the end of the day, they're just damage. I realize to non-developers that something saying it does "+5 frost damage" somehow makes it special but it doesn't. It's just

I don't understand how WoW got so popular. Of the MMO choices I had available to me in 2004 it was the worst one. Dark Age was far superior.. I think it was just the timing. It came out just as people were getting computers that could handle that kind of game, and broadband was becoming ubiquitous.
The un PC nature doesn't bug me, but it might engender some bad reviews if it feels hostile towards women. It would be nice to see a system that ends up with a at least a possibility of divvying up your territories between the other nations once your sovereign is destroyed instead of an all or nothing deal.
My simple response to finneglot. Being an administrator isn't fun, being a hero that pushes his country with his belly IS fun.
Thus, in Sid’s words, the player must “always be the star.” As designers, we need to be the player’s greatest advocate during a game’s development, always considering carefully how design decisions affect both the player’s agency in the world and his understanding of the underlying mechanics.
