One thing is left out of console vs. PC arguments when speaking of piracy: rentals. I wonder how much revenue is lost due to game rentals. Think about it, a rental store buys a few copies, rents them continuously until they lose appeal, then sells their extra copies. Do game devs/pubs receive any part of the rentals and used copy sales? I don't think so. So if one were to compare the loss of profit due to console rentals with the loss of profit due to PC piracy,

One thing I thought would've been awesome in GalCiv2 is the ability to create a couple of fleets right from the main menu and watch them go at it. Something like Total War where you can create the battle of your choice. Since Elemental is putting at least a little more direct control of battles in the player's hands, I think it'd be especially cool to have some form of skirmish mode in it. That way, if you don't have the time to jump into your main game you could still play

I tried reading a bunch of the fantasy staples like Shanarra, Dragonlance, etc. but didn't get very far because they all seemed way to derivative. I did get totally hooked by R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt serious, especially the Icewind Dale Trilogy. I wound up reading a dozen Drizzt books before I tired of them, and I actually want to grab the last few books here soon. You could probably say that the Drizzt books are derivative too, but they're really fun reads and less of an att
The inclusion of an old American car just seems plain bizzare and yet another redundant American culture reference like those that littered Voyager.
That drives me nuts too. I hate how in all Star Trek, whenever there's a pop culture reference from Earth it's always something from the 50's or earlier; movies, cars, books, music, etc. They act like nothing of quality was ever made past the mid-twentieth century.

I've always wanted to see a Klingon movie, spoken 100% in Klingon and done like a three hour battle epic! That would be amazing. I think a whole series of Klingons would get old though. They don't have much depth of character y'know.

1. I'm excited because it's Star Trek. + 2. I think it'll be a good movie because it's J.J. =Should be a cool Star Trek movie. BUT, I would've actually preferred to see straight-to-video or TV movies of DS9 or Voyager before this. I really don't understand the reboot thing from a storytelling standpoint. It's obvious why they're doing it since it has worked so well for Batman, 007, etc. But how will they start a n

I originally found out about this project from a Wiki link to an interview from 2006. So for the folks that heard about it at the time of that interview, there has been a long wait for a Stardock fantasy TBS already.

I'm excited about the art too. It's great to see something different for a change. Besides, has no one seen the success of TF2? Not to mention the forthcoming Battlefield Heroes. These games are not realistic graphical representations but more stylistic, and they still utilize the full effects of modern tech. It's similar to the way Van Helsing had a B&W intro with CGI. I thought that was pretty sweet. Plus, the added benefit of being abl

I was hoping it was just me though. :P
1) what's the ETA on D3 and 2) when is the beta? can't seem to find it on the site
IGN says Q1 2009 for D3. I've heard nothing about a beta.

PC games being cheaper is part of what attracts me to the format as well. And I'm really tired of hearing everyone dog on gaming pc's for being so expensive and in constant need of upgrading. I first dipped my toes into PC gaming about three years ago, and I slapped an $89 GeForce 6800 into my cheap, crappy eMachine with a 2.0GB single-core cpu and was playing all kinds of great games right off the bat. Later, I upgraded to a gig of RAM and traded up for a 7600 and could pla

I've been wanting to play Shadow Magic for a long time but it runs about 50 bucks for a used copy. I'd love to see gog.com pick it up and offer it for 7 or 10. On a side note, Triumph Studios has announced they are expanding on their website. Since they've only produced 4 games to date, 3 of which are AoW games, one can only hope another is in the works. I know they are developing an Overlord sequel, but with the current fantasy TBS renaissance occurring right

I'm a big fan of Disciples II and am truly excited to see what they're doing for part III. I just found out about a new six and a half minute video they posted on their site yesterday: http://www.disciples3.ru/main_eng.htm This ought to tide us over until Elemental launches. Looks amazing! I needed to DL it with a manager though, because their server kept crashing. Unless you have light speed broadband

Not exactly this genre, but if you like TBS games then check out: http://www.crypticcomet.com/ They have a finished TBS game with CCG elements called Armageddon Empires that is sweet! They're also working on a new TBS game due out a year from now. Trust me, if you like turn-based games at all, you'll like this game. There's a demo on the site.

Reply to Campaign in War of Magic

A campaign would be welcomed by yours truly, but on the condition that you don't have to start over from scratch at every new chapter. That is sooooo annoying. I rarely make it through campaigns that don't allow continual progress. The HOMM games are an exception, since the hero levels and it's easy to see why little minions need to be built up. But there are times in HOMM campaigns where the city you just conquered and built up needs to be built up again in the follow

I imagine this will turn out exactly like GalCiv only with body parts instead of ship parts. I don't, however, think that we'll be able to make many customizations that will be like "Sporn" or something. They'll just be like traditional RPG character creation features only you do it as much as you want instead of at the beginning of the game. It's definitely a cool idea though!

I'm glad to see the Fire Emblem games mentioned! Those are some of the finest fantasy TBS games ever made. You really had to be careful with your decisions because every move counted, especially if you were trying to acquire a new character. It was almost like a puzzle that needed to be solved. I'm a big HOMM fan, but let's face it, once you amass a substantially larger army you win. I'd love to see tactical turn-based battles with more consequence in PC gaming.&

Total War battles are the perfect setting for the pause/real-time mechanic. If TW battles were turn-based you would lose much of the realism that is the fun of those games. But in a classic TBS game like MOM (which I've never played), AoW, HOMM, Disciples, etc. there is no realism factor since you are using little units that represent larger units. In other words, it's the chess/miniature style battling that makes TBS games fun. I think pausing to issue orders just fee

After reading the few previews and interviews about Elemental on the net, I'm kinda worried that the tactical combat aspect of the game will be found lacking. It seems as though Stardock wants this to be sim-heavy with combat thrown in almost just because. Do you think combat will be an afterthought in this game? Because if it is, I'm not sure I'll be interested. Nelson

I started playing at HOMM4, which I liked a ton at the time, but now I'm strictly playing HOMM5. The demo didn't do it justice. I played through it twice and was still undecided, but after I bought the full game I became hooked. I also picked up the 1st expansion download from Ubi.com for 10 bucks, and grabbed the second expansion for about 10 off eBay, so there's really no need to wait for a "Gold" edition, since it's pretty cheap to pick up all three. The second
