I like it when it's pure fantasy. When I get an army of rifflemen in front of me it's a big turn off. I like the idea of starting off in the dark ages and moving up. If the entire world as been destroyed then it's normal to expect that agriculture as been lost. Some few humans might remember how to do it but most of the tools are land is gone. As far back as it can star and move it along up to just before modern techs. Lets not go there.
it to be the spell of mastery exactly, which was a 'universal' spell
"Universal spell" sounds like a spell that uses all four (or five, whatever) elements. Care to explain the difference?
On Darkodinplus' crit of landi's Planet Rebirth spell, I don't see any faults with it on the 5-elements level. Blasted lands surely include fouled air, and probably some 'inappropriate' fire (volcanism). Plus, you could use fire has that general-purpose destructive aspect that you could apply to purging undesirable stuff, including boiling water to leave behind a bunch of dissolved nastiness while clean steam escapes. The scope of that spell could be a real problem, though,

I am generally against automatic tolling or rights of passage. I think that they should be implimented as optional and negotiable, but forcing people to put up with them in all circumstances excluding treaties: reminds me too much of civ4.

I would be willing to accept a system in which borders exist, and crossing the border of an annoyed faction could irritate them further. I just don't want to start out with closed borders..... although an option to close them in-game would be nice. But, as always, this could easily be resolved by pre-game settings switches.

Yeah. The X are arguably the series's most dangerous creatures.... and I higlhy doubt that destroying SR388 wiped them out for good...... if they came back, it would be....... bad...... for everyone..... hint, hint, hint.

Yeah, I could use a few more variable turns. Civ 4 roads actually looked pretty good. It also looks like they atren't using the whole area of their tile for curves.... look at all the distance from where the rocks stop to where the road starts.
