I am not sure what the max is, but I am targeting 8 - 10 people. I am planning to have 13-16 provinces per person. Maps can get much larger.

louist, you do not need much of a connection for PBEM. You need to be able to send and receive a couple of emails per day. Turn files are small. Initial turn frequency will be 24 hours. It will be increased at turn 30 to 48 hours (sooner if needed). If someone is losing, I would prefer they fight to the end. Of course, this is the sort of thing that will drive a paying customer to start downloading cracked .exes so they can play the game they bought. It is only a short step after that to not bothering to pay for the games to begin with.
What version are you playing? Version 1.1 no longer uses essence. To imbue a champion, it is just a spell. It does have a maintenance cost of 1 mana per turn. Mana generation comes from building shrines on shards (beyond the 3 per turn generated by a sovereign).
If you purchased through Impulse, it is already registered. The update requirement is for those who purchased a box copy.
It would be entirely possible to purchase a copy at a store, but not install it, in which case it would not be registered.
My first exposure to cracks came from games that were protected by SecuROM. I had purchased Neverwinter Nights, and later Knights of the Old Republic, but they would not play with my CD-ROM drive. I had to get cracks to make them work. The first time, it was provided by tech service, the next time I just decided to go find it on my own. From those experiences, I learned just how easy it was to find cracks for software.
