And as soon as the player doesn't care, building the whole system is a waste of time. There's lots of things the players DO care about that need developer attention.
That wasn't my point. I was saying that all of this super detailed complexity would not be modeled in large scale battles because they have little to no effect on the battle as a whole. If you are playing MMORPG style which a single character who is YOU, breaking your ank

I forgot the math used to calculate variations of a set. But even if you only have 10 types of blades, 10 types of crossguards and 10 types of hilts. That adds up to a heck of a lot of swords variations, even with 3 components. And that number will skyrocket if you get the ability to resize them. Systems like this can be found all over the place. Mount and Blade has a system of generating faces that relies on a set of sliders. At the start of a new game you get to create a face using
Plus most of the crap were going to put on the swords is just eye candy. It doesn't matter if it has a gap down the middle, or if the blade edge is wavy shaped. The hitbox for that sword will be the same. In fact it doesn't even have to be a box, you could get away with two points and a line between them.
I keep saying that this whole argument is pretty much irrelevent. Even if you could make that many sowrds etc. (let's remember that you would need the same level of "density" for ALL types of weapon), running a simulation that intense would suck up an increadible amount of processing power and virtual memory, crashing the game on anything but the very fastest rigs.
You are still VASTLY overestimating the complexity of a system like
Alternately you could make the rose bush 1 foot tall and 60 feet wide. Even harder to cross and nowhere to hide! Although that might deter cavalry and weaker units, if your legs are covetred in armor it won't be too big of a deal. Might slow you down a bit, but in the end you could wade through it w/o damage. I would say that a bush needs to be at least 4 feet tall to have any universal "stopping" power.
True, but even

Unlike a wooden wall you cant stand on top and throw things down on people.
You are vastly underestimating the effort it takes to burn down green plants. Setting them on fire is easy with the right fuel. But a rose bush 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide contains a lot of water and it will burn (but mostly steam
If you add 300 varities of swords, some developer has to sit there and create 300 varities of swords.
That argument won't fly in one regard. Stardocks intention as I understand it is to give us a system we can use to make "our" swords. Even if they include only 6 types at launch, those will mutate and evolve into thousands of unique examples within a week.
In order to actually make
Defensive hedges don't look like that. They can grow so thick it is impossible to move through them. Not to mention some of them can have thorns. Imagine trying to attack through a super dense rose bush 10 feet high and twice as wide.
I dont mind that their hedge walls if they can be upgraded. If that is the case...the above picture suggests that you can have multiple upgradable walls? That would actually be tight...
<
That's getting too complicated for a game. Saying "swords behave differently from axes behave differently from bows" is one thing. Having 31 varieties of swords that all behave differently because you want to model the different kind of rapiers (and all the other varities of swords) is getting way beyond what non-hardcore players are going to want to deal with. Not to mention the devleopment time to create all those weapons and balance th
I believe the modern notion is that they could have been used to hack the head off of the pike making it less dangerous. But since we were not there all we really know for certain is that it was a big ass sword. I suppose it could have been used against cavalry as well. If only to attack the horses legs.
If Blizzard pulls something like this for SC2 I will thereafter think of them as "Shitstorm" and lose all interest in thier games. Track record be damned.
EDIT: Doubled. I have no idea how that happened.
Pretty awesome. I should get back to writing mine. Its called "Escalation" and its over in the sins forum. Its set in a much different period of time though, during the outbreak of a third theoretical game expansion. It stalled because my free time is very limited these days but I'd love to finish it.
2) He may be missing a few minor convenience features.
Danger Will Robinson! Danger! Also, they are pegging thier entire profit model on people buying shiny skins for thier units? That doesn't sound workable...
THE ONLY THINGS YOU CAN BUY WITH REAL LIFE MONEY ARE COSMETIC IMPROVEMENTS
Thats almost worse. They are trying to extort me for content that should already be part of the game.
uhh.... my interest just dropped to zero. "invest for success!" is not my idea of a fun game.
The best way to test something is to forget nothing, good or bad. If you don't like something but can't quantify WHY then mention it anyway. Its possible that someone else had the same problem, and only by discussing it between the two of you will you be able to give it a name.
Ugh that blatant recycling of contend kind of puts me off. It just shows the devlopers would rather be cheap instead of creative.
Bar unforseen difficulties I will be at PAX too. [e digicons]:w00t:[/e]
Agreed. As I mentioned in my mechanics of warfare thread, weapons need to be categorized by damage as well as shape. A morning star is a spiked mace, but it still does plenty of bludgeoning damage if the spikes fail to pierce something. A pair of rapiers might both be piercing swords, but if one is bladed and the other is just a spike you have to differentiate between them. While that might seem to be a trivial detail it could affect combat in a variety of ways. A bladed rapier might

Its pretty funny how out of whack the ERSB ratings are. The categories are somewhat vague and they often get applied to games which do not deserve to rate them.
How much will we see at PAX? [e digicons]:D[/e]
So once the resource is tapped and available, all other "accessories" like convenient modes of transportation are just stacking bonuses? It could work.
