What are you talking about? The cloth map rocks. Yeah - and then i buy a new car i just use the spare wheel...
Believe it or not, I actually find the cloth map more attractive and functional than 3D view. It's easy to tell at a glance what's happening whereas things are more obscure in the 3D mode. But whether or not you like the cloth map, the fact remains that Stardock specifically des

Thing is, I'm only getting BSOD with Elemental. I can play games like Borderlands, Fallout 3, and Torchlight for hours without a hitch, so I'm not inclined to think it's a problem with my hardware. Still, probably wouldn't hurt to update my video card drivers just in case. I'll try to catch the BSOD details if it happens again.

A fair assessment if a little overly harsh. The one thing they don't say is that despite the problems, Elemental is still a blast to play.

Vanilla Civ 4 is one of the best strategy games ever made. The expansion packs simply take a great game and make it better.

I can't see how Elemental really qualifies as "most disappointing". Maybe shortly after release, yes, but in the past few months it has seen such substantial improvements, and Stardock has proven their dedication and commitment to the game that I don't see how anybody can continue to express disappointment with it.
My laptop is probably below average in terms of a gaming machine however it exceeds the minimum specs easily...
Keep in mind that minimum specs are for the cloth map. You need a fairly beefy rig to run the 3D view in all of its glory. That said, I actually prefer the cloth map because it offers a much clearer view of the game world. For example, in the cloth map it's easy to tell at a glance what buildings in a town are under construct
Civ games generally suck until the complete version with all the xpacks is released.
I disagree. Civ IV was a great experience out of the box (apart from a few bugs of varying severity). The expansion packs just made it even better. But when I look at Civ V, I see people asking for expansion packs to fix fundamental design flaws. As a fan of Sid Meier and Firaxis, that's disappointing to see.

Occasionally when clicking on an opponent in the world map to initiate discussion, I'll see the dialog screen for a second and then the game will crash Windows hard (as in drop to a text console with a memory dump). I don't suspect problems with my hardware because Elemental is the only game I've had this experience with. Here's the save file from just before the crash and the debug.err: http://www.filedropper.com/autosave <

If you're not seeing one in the options then there probably isn't. I don't know if there's a way to force it as a command line option. Another option is to force vsync in your OS video card settings.

It was basically impossible to take a town without siege weapons and/or overwhelmin

That 2GB size you see is for the entire game, but the update is only about 40MB because Impulse only updates a few of the files.

It would certainly make the game more fluid as a whole.
Seems to me that could make adventuring overpowered. By making it a researchable tech, it keeps things in check because you need to expend sometimes considerable resources to advance. Cause those of us with modern rigs still have crash issues.
As ironic as it sounds, there is some truth to what you say. It has been my experience that systems with newer hardware are often more unstable than older boxes simply because the hardware in them is untested. Older hardware has been put through its paces and usually has the most rock solid drivers

Look for the glowy fog on the edge of the map: that's the retreat zone. I actually agree with this particular design premise. Retreat should be very costly because it eliminates cheese tactics. If you're going to engage someone in battle then you better be damn sure you can see it to the end. None of this "hit-and-run" nonsense to try and whittle down a superior force.
